Dexter girls hold on, upset No. 1 Stearns in ‘C’ semifinal

... But Peach (23 points, 19 rebounds) scored the next four points to put Dexter up six with 1:14 remaining. Emma Alley and Kayli Cunningham subsequently traded two points and Dexter still led by six with 27 seconds left.

Emma Alley (19 points, 3 steals) subsequently drained a 3-pointer from well beyond the college line to give Stearns life with 14 seconds left, and the Minutemen had a chance to tie after a lane violation on a Dexter free throw.

Alley’s desperation deep 3-ball hit the back of the iron as time expired, and the Tigers were able to escape in spite of 19 turnovers.

“We didn’t make it easy on ourselves,” said Grant. “Things got away from us a little bit at the end. We’re going to have to go back to the drawing board and clean some of that stuff up.”

Peach powers Dexter girls past GSA for ‘C’ North title

... “We were trying to share it with each other and make sure we got it into the best hands that we could,” said Abby Webber. “It got a little hectic at times, so we tried to re-collect and then find the best passing options.”

The Tigers had their hands full against Dauk, a versatile 6-footer who scored a game-high 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Cunningham tried to front Dauk and got help from Peach in the post.

“I’ve had a few [games] against girls that are my size, but she’s so talented,” Peach said of Dauk.

“I was pleased with our defense,” Grant said. “Dauk got going there a little bit at times and hit some shots, but I thought overall we defended, collectively, pretty well in stretches.”

Monmouth tops Old Orchard Beach in Class C South final
The Mustangs earn their first regional title since 2000 with a 65-25 victory.

... “This is great,” said Monmouth Academy guard Tia Day, who received the Robin Colcord Award as the Class C South tournament’s most valuable player. “It’s great, especially with this group of girls. We are such great friends, (and) so many of us have put in so much extra work.”

The Mustangs sank 25 of 32 free throws during the first three quarters to open a 50-20 lead. Monmouth sank 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter to eclipse the tournament’s record of 28 made free throws set by Hall-Dale in 1981.

“We’ve been doing a lot of competition in free throws,” Day said. “Free throws are very important to us.”

Abbey Allen led Monmouth with 17 points. Julia Johnson, a sophomore reserve followed with 12 points. Hannah Anderson added 11 points. Day scored 10 points.

Monmouth girls basketball wins Class C South title

Mustangs earn 1st Class C title with win over Old Orchard in finals.

... Foul trouble dogged the Seagulls early, especially with strong post players Meghan LaPlante, who picked up three fouls in the first half, and Maggie Strohm, who picked up her fourth foul with 1:58 left in the second quarter. Strohm fouled out with 4:30 left in the third quarter.

“We wanted to try to get those big girls having to move early on in the game. They’re obviously pretty tall trees in there. They get their hands on a lot of balls. We knew if we could get them in some foul trouble it would become our advantage,” Monmouth coach Scott Wing said.

As the game progressed, the Mustangs were able to press more and force Old Orchard turnovers, widening their lead.

Monmouth goes to the line to win first Class C regional crown

No. 3 Monmouth set a new record for free throws made in a tournament game and played stifling defense to win its first regional title in Class C. It won four in Class D, most recently in 2000.

Abbey Allen led the Mustangs (19-3) with 17 points, while Julia Johnson added 12, Hannah Anderson 11 and Tia Day 10.

"It's crazy," said Day, who was named the tournament's most outstanding player. "So many of us have put in so much extra work, long nights, early mornings. So pulling out a win in this game, it makes us so happy."

"It's really exciting," Allen said. "We've been working really hard. All of us play in the offseason, too."

Emily Greenlee led the Seagulls (13-9) with nine points and 10 rebounds.

2017 BDN North region Class C all-tournament basketball teams

... In Class C, the 6-foot Peach had a tremendous tournament as she had 61 points and 49 rebounds in the victories over Madawaska, top seed Stearns and George Stevens Academy. She provided 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in the championship game matchup again Dauk and GSA.

She showed some nifty moves in the paint and was a valuable rim protector

Dexter Girls Basketball Backing up the Talk

The state games are this weekend for high school basketball. Class D and class C are in Bangor this year. The Dexter girls will represent the north in the class C state game. Senior star Megan Peach told us they could beat any team in class C back in December, and the 5 seeded Tigers have backed up her words.
