SJ Tournament notes: Class C girls :

- No prep, no problem.... In preparation for the postseason, the Monmouth Academy coaching staff worked throughout the regular season to scout several Class C South girls’ basketball teams.

- Learning from a rout ... Monmouth and Searsport were close for about half of a quarter before the Mustangs took off with a big run.

Boothbay girls basketball downs Mount Abram
Seahawks advance to C South regional semis against Monmouth.

...Boothbay (18-1) advanced to play No. 3 Monmouth in the semifinals on Thursday in Augusta. Mt. Abram finished 11-9.

A mix of offensive struggles and a hot Seahawks offense ultimately did the Roadrunners in. Boothbay had two double-double performances in guard Faith Blethen (15 points, 10 rebounds) and forward Page Brown (15 points, 12 rebounds). The Seahawks also received a big game from guard Sydney Meader, who scored 14 points.

“We don’t have any quit in us,” Mt. Abram head coach Larry Donald said. “And we couldn’t throw it into the ocean (offensively), especially early in the game before (Boothbay) started creeping on us. We make a few shots, we stay in it.”

Boothbay bounces Mt. Abram
... “We got in a little bit of a rhythm and settled in offensively,” Boothbay coach Tanner Grover said. “Some times the first one is always the toughest one and to get in that rhythm and establish what you want to do.

“Sydney Meader was fantastic. Her defensive energy out front on our press and running the floor on transition and finishing transition. I mean she put together a heckuva game. I was very happy for her.”

Mt. Abram’s offense could only muster two points in the first quarter and finally scored with just over two minutes left. The Seahawks also had trouble finding the basket in that quarter, scoring just over three minutes into that quarter.

Monmouth girls hold off Waynflete in C South quarterfinal
Abbey Allen leads way with 16 points for Mustangs.

... Day opened the fourth quarter with a driving layup in traffic to make it 42-35, but Brooks answered by sandwiching a bank shot and a hook in the lane around a free throw to make it 42-40. Neither team scored a basket after that. Allen, Anderson and Day hit single free throws in the final 27 seconds to put the game away. Giguere was ruled to have fouled Allen intentionally, which gave the Mustangs two shots and the ball.

“I think she was running after her and the girl stopped and she kind of pitched into her,” Waynflete coach Mike Jeffords said. “The way I saw it she pitched forward. We certainly coach them to go after the ball.”

Seven different players scored for Monmouth in the first half, led by Allen with 12 points. The junior forward moved into the starting lineup early in the season and has performed well since.

w/ post game video ...Monmouth edges Waynflete to secure semifinal berth

... “It was an absolute grind,” Mustangs coach Scott Wing said. “But I give kudos to Waynflete, they’re a solid team, they play a tough schedule throughout the year.

“And they’re the type of team that gives us a hard time — a few big girls and a point guard (Isabel Burdick) that we couldn’t get her to turn the ball over.”

Dexter girls pull away for ‘C’ quarterfinal win over Madawaska

... “Even our guards box out,” said Peach. “Everybody did what they needed to do tonight. It was a team win.”

Peach said Madawaska was, “a really athletic team” but didn’t think they were used to the physical play underneath the basket.

“When you play Foxcroft and Central, you have to box out. I don’t think they’ve been exposed to that,” said Peach.

“Dexter is a very good team,” said Madawaska coach Dean Gendreau. “The Peach girl was really good. They were very aggressive and we aren’t used to that constant aggressiveness.”

Top-seeded Stearns girls survive ‘C’ North scare from Narraguagus

... He was right, but the Minutemen were able to survive the upset-minded Lady Knights 51-41 behind a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds from junior forward Peighton Ingersoll.

Senior guard Emma Alley contributed 12 points and six assists for Stearns (18-1), which meets No. 5 Dexter, a 50-26 winner over No. 4 Madawaska, in Friday’s 8:35 p.m. semifinal at the Cross Insurance Center. Narraguagus finished at 14-6.

“That’s as good an eighth seed as you’re going to find in the tournament,” said Brown. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Peighton Ingersoll really had a big game.

Old Orchard Beach holds off Madison
The Seagulls advance to the Class C South semifinals with a 45-41 win.

... With just under 40 seconds left, and OOB leading by two, LeBlanc had a layup go in and out. Samantha Donnell made a free throw and Bri Plante sank a pair of foul shots to ice the win for Old Orchard Beach.

Emily Greenlee paced the Seagulls with 15 points. Plante scored eight of her 11 points in the second half, and Meghan LaPlante added 14 points.

“The girls found a way. Meghan LaPlante was big for us in the first half, and I thought Bri Plante took over the second,” Plante said.

Madison Coach Al Veneziano said the Bulldogs got what they expected from the Seagulls defensively, a tough 2-3 zone and some pressure. Madison just couldn’t make shots consistently.
