Gray-New Gloucester holds off Houlton for Class B title
The Patriots win their first girls' basketball state championship

... Conley blocked Houlton’s final shot, then smiled broadly as she held the ball in the final seconds.

“It’s all about them,” Andreasen said of his players. “They did it. They made it a mission after we lost in the state game last year. When we lost that game they made it the goal to get back.”

Gray-New Gloucester had a big edge in rebounding, 36-22, which wasn’t surprising since Houlton lost one of its top rebounders, Kristen Graham, to a knee injury in the last regular-season game. That the Shiretowners, who won the Class C state title two years ago, were so close was a testament to their players.

“I thought we gave it a valiant effort against a fantastic team,” said Graham. “And we still had a chance.”

Class B state championship: DeTroy provided unlikely offensive spark for Patriots

... "Izzy doesn't realize how good of a shooter she is," Andreasen said. "She's a mid-range shooter. She's not a 3-point shooter."

Not only did DeTroy help the Patriots settle in, she triggered a 13-0 run.

"Without her hitting those three shots, I don't know if we would have been able to get any offensive momentum," Conley said. "It's something that takes true leadership. She has great composure and she showed that."

Sophomore guard Brianna Jordan picked up where DeTroy left off, scoring five of the Patriots' next seven points. DeTroy returned the favor and took over defending Houlton star guard Kolleen Bouchard for much of the rest of the game.

Gray-New Gloucester beats Houlton for Class B state title

... Sophomore Bri Jordan sealed the deal with a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The first one, the front end of a one-and-one, bounced up and then dropped in.

“I was nervous,” Jordan said. “I just took it and the luck went by my side for the first one, and then the second one, I was just like, ‘This will help us get a bigger lead, I can do this,’ and it just went right in.”

Conley scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. After being shut out in the opening two quarters, she took advantage of a defensive change by Houlton and carried the Gray-NG offense in the second half.
