Houlton girls looking for third straight title

HOULTON, Me (WAGM) - The Houton girls will battle for their third straight Gold Ball on Friday night in Augusta. The Shiretowners and Gray New Gloucester will play for the Class B title. Graham says it should be a great match up

Gray-New Gloucester seniors relish one last chance to compete together

GRAY — However challenging the workouts Gray-New Gloucester girls’ basketball coach Mike Andreasen has put the team’s four seniors through over the past four years, they have nothing on Trudi Gillen’s Friday night workouts several years ago.

“It was the hardest practices I have ever have been to,” Patriots senior Grace Kariotis said this week. “We always were doing dribbling drills, always running.

“Now that I look back at it, it really, really paid off.”

Those Friday-night sessions were near the beginning of an odyssey for the four seniors — Kariotis, Skye Conley, Izzy DeTroy and Alicia Dumont — that will conclude this Friday with Gray-New Gloucester’s second straight Class B state championship game appearance.

What time does this game start? I've seen both 7 pm and 6 pm from different sources.

X31: Thursdays Bangor Daily News Sports page schedule has it starting @ 6:05pm at Augusta Civic Center. But you would think that the mpa would have a 7:05pm start seeing it is a Friday night?

Gray-New Gloucester has ‘unfinished business’ in state title game
Sophomore Bri Jordan carries a big load as the Patriots play Houlton in a championship-game rematch.

... Andreasen said Jordan is a gifted athlete. She’s the team’s point guard, but at 5-foot-10 is also one of its tallest players. “I consider her our best defender,” said Andreasen, meaning she likely will guard Houlton’s all-state player, Kolleen Bouchard.

Dumont said the regional final was “definitely the best game we’ve ever seen her play.” But Jordan noted that anyone on this team could have done it.

“Somebody has to take shots and I happened to be making some of mine,” she said. “Coach always says if you’re making them, why not take the next one? I think we all have the ability to have those nights. We don’t have a best player. We all have our different talents and together we make a team. We make a good team.”

Agreed, I was pretty sure 7:00 was always the standard start time for the Friday night championship games.

Gray-New Gloucester outlasts Houlton for ‘B’ girls state crown

... “It was a valiant effort against a fantastic team,” said Shiretowners’ coach Shawn Graham.

Gray-New Gloucester never trailed during the second half, but neither did the Patriots enjoy a comfortable lead despite the inside work of Conley, who shot 5-for-9 from the field and blocked five shots after the break.

Conley scored all eight of her team’s points in the third quarter as GNG increased a 16-11 halftime lead to as much as 24-16 when the Patriots’ center made two free throws after grabbing an offensive rebound with two minutes left in the period.

“At the beginning of the game they were zoning us and all year we’ve had a problem with zones and every team has figured it out,” said Conley. “The second half they went to man (defense) and that’s how we like to play, five on five. That makes it a lot easier for me in the post and for the guards to get the ball in the paint, and we did that and it built our momentum.”
