Gray-NG survives Lake Region scare
The top-seeded Patriots hold on for a 33-29 win in a Class B South semifinal.

... This was a tight game throughout. Gray-New Gloucester’s biggest lead was six (21-15, which was the halftime score) and Lake Region’s biggest lead was three (10-7 early in the second).

The Lakers made a run in the third quarter, scoring the first six points to tie the game at 21. Then they moved ahead 26-23 on a 3-pointer by Kristen Huntress with 1:09 left in the third. Two foul shots by Conley with 14 seconds remaining pulled the Patriots within 26-25 entering the fourth – only the second time this year Gray-New Gloucester trailed going into the fourth.

“It was very stressful having it a one-possession game most of the game,” said Conley, who led the Patriots with 12 points. “We knew we had to keep trying to play our game, try to get some momentum going our way.”

Lake Region controlled the tempo in the third as the Patriots struggled to get anything going.

Patriots survive Lakers, advance to B South final

... But the explanation for why the Patriots were able to survive the Lakers was simple.

“We just happened to make a few more plays than them,” Gray-NG coach Mike Andreasen said. “That’s pretty much, simply, it.”

Patriots sophomore Bri Jordan went a bit rogue to make one of the biggest plays of the game. With Gray-NG leading 30-29 with 54 seconds remaining in the game, Jordan broke from the plan on an inbound pass, cutting toward the hoop rather than away from it, caught a pass over the top and scored an easy layup to give the Patriots a comfortable three-point cushion, 32-29.

Lincoln Academy heads to Class B South final
Brie Wajer scores 24 points – including her 1,000th career point – to lead the Eagles past Poland, 62-52.

Brie Wajer sparked the Lincoln Academy girls’ basketball team to a berth in the Class B South final for the second straight year – and did so while scoring her 1,000th career point Thursday.

Wajer scored 24 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Eagles in a 62-52 semifinal victory over Poland at Cross Insurance Arena. No. 6 Lincoln Academy (15-5) will play top-seeded Gray-New Gloucester for the regional title at 1 p.m. Saturday at CIA.

“We pulled out the win – that’s the biggest thing,” said Wajer, a senior guard. “The 1,000 points was obviously the icing on the cake.”

Lincoln fends off pesky Poland in B South semifinals

PORTLAND — Poland kept bouncing back but couldn’t catch Lincoln Academy, which held on to beat the Knights 62-52 in a Class B South girls’ basketball semifinal at Cross Insurance Arena on Thursday.

“I think that’s a testament to our toughness, our mental toughness, and the girls really just believing in each other,” Poland coach Mike Susi said.

“We talked about tonight that basketball is a game of runs, and when you get down, you got to make your tun back. I think we always had a run back, but when you get in those situations when you’re down 14 points in the tournament, you have to expend a lot of energy to get back.”

Late 3-pointer helps Houlton girls hold off Foxcroft for ‘B’ North championship

... Foxcroft Academy coach Blake Smith called Flewelling’s 3-pointer a “tide-turner.”

“That was important for them,” agreed Foxcroft senior forward Abigail Simpson. “She’s really good with 3-point shots. When she’s wide open, she can make them.”

“We ran one of our set plays. It’s either Kolleen for three or me. I was open so Kolleen passed it to me and it worked out,” said Flewelling. “We had set a double screen right before.”

Houlton coach Shawn Graham explained that the two options on the play were to have Bouchard take it to the rim or, if the Foxcroft defenders collapsed on her, “kick it out to Flewelling on the weak side.”

Gray-NG heads back to Class B state title game
Bri Jordan leads the Patriots with 16 points in a 46-32 win over Lincoln Academy in the South regional final.

... Jordan, a sophomore guard, scored 16 points to pace a second-half surge that carried top-ranked Gray-New Gloucester to a 46-32 victory over sixth-seeded Lincoln Academy in the Class B South girls’ basketball championship game.

She had seven points in the third quarter when the Patriots took control.

It was Gray-New Gloucester’s second consecutive Class B South title, both wins coming over the Eagles. The Patriots (20-1) will play Houlton (20-1) in a rematch of last year’s Class B state title game at 6 p.m. Friday at the Augusta Civic Center.

“It feels unbelievable,” said Skye Conley, a senior center for the Patriots. “We’ve all put in so much work, been playing AAU together since fifth grade, going to clinics together. To accomplish this really took a total team effort.”

... “It was really awesome. I probably told her a few times after the game, ‘So much of of this is a result of you pushing through, when a lot of us, I don’t know if it was nerves or something just overcame us, but she was that force that got us through the first half and at least the third quarter,” Patriots senior Izzy DeTroy said.

“So I thanked her like three times. I mean, it’s a team, so that’s what we do, but she had a really amazing game.”

Jordan was named the tournament’s most outstanding players after scoring a game-high 16 points, including 10 in the second half during a stretch when the Patriots pulled away.
