PREVIEW: Parity reigns in B North girls division

... The Shires have Bangor Daily News All-Maine Schoolgirl first-team selection Kolleen Bouchard and other talents like senior captain Rylee Warman and junior forward Aspen Flewelling, so they are the favorites. But the regular season provided its share of challenges, such as the Jan. 25 home loss to Presque Isle and tight victories over Hermon (two overtimes), John Bapst and the Wildcats.

“With such a balanced Class B field, I think we are very fortunate to be the one team with just one loss,” Houlton coach Shawn Graham said with three games remaining. “The parity within our class is unbelievable, so you have to show up every night ready to play or you’re going to get beat.”

Bouchard, a junior, has put together another brilliant season by averaging 27.5 points and 8.5 rebounds.

Presque Isle girls overcome adversity, edge John Bapst in ‘B’ girls quarterfinal

...Second-seeded Presque Isle (15-4) rallied behind their leader and hung on to beat No. 7 John Bapst 37-36 in a Class B North quarterfinal game at the Cross Insurance Center. The Crusaders end their season with a 12-7 record.

“Emily does everything for us,” Presque Isle coach Jeff Hudson said. “She’s our ball handler and does a great job. So it was gut check time for us for sure. The only time we really had to play without her was the last game of the year against Caribou. Maybe that was a blessing in disguise for us.”

Wheaton finished with nine points while Skylar Vogel led Presque Isle with 11 points. Emily Lagerstrom and Savanah Rodriguez each scored eight.

Crystal Bell led John Bapst with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Grace Philippon added 11 points.

Hermon girls outlast tenacious Winslow in ‘B’ quarterfinal

...Neither team led by more than four points at any juncture, but Hermon finally clicked late.

Ciara LeClair’s 13-footer from the lane gave the Black Raiders a 31-30 lead with 2:47 left, but the Hawks scored the next five points.

Facilitator Lauren Plissey (13 rebounds, 5 blocked shots, 4 assists) fed her sister Paige Plissey underneath to put Hermon ahead for good and Madi Curtis hit one of two from the foul line. After Alex Allain missed two free throws, Lauren Plissey sank two to make it 35-31 with 15.1 seconds to play.

LeClair drove in for a basket with three seconds left, but Winslow could not get the ball back.

Hermon edges Winslow in B North girls quarterfinals
Hawks use tough defense, late free throws to advance.

... Plissy and 6-foot forward Emi Higgins (13 points) were the focus of Winslow’s defense, but it was guard Alex Allain, who made a pair of 3-pointers, and guard Maddy Curtis, who scored six points in the third quarter, who kept the Hawks in the game.

“Their post players did a great job. They did things we didn’t expect. That duo (Higgins and Lauren Plissy), they’re great. Their guards did a great job of getting them the ball,” Winslow coach Lindsey Withee said. “We didn’t expect their guards to knock down a couple big threes.

Houlton girls hold off upset-minded MDI in ‘B’ quarterfinal

... Houlton clung to a 37-36 lead when Warman nailed her 3 from left side of the key.

“I wasn’t even thinking about it. Kolleen (Bouchard) set me a screen and it just went off my fingers,” said Warman.

Bouchard said it wasn’t an easy shot, “because (Warman) was leaning forward. There was a girl right behind her. That was great.”

“That was huge,” said Graham. “I like the fact she’s been in that situation many times the past couple of years. She didn’t hesitate. When she came off the dribble, her head was on the rim.”

“That was the dagger. We couldn’t quite get over the edge (after that),” said MDI coach Brent Barker.

Houlton missing one of top players for ‘B’ tourney

If the top-seeded Houlton High School girls basketball team is going to beat No. 4 Hermon on Wednesday night in their Class B North semifinal at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, the Shires are going to have to do it without 5-foot-8 junior forward/guard Kristen Graham, who is second on the team in rebounds, assists and steals.

Graham tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee late in the regular-season finale, a 52-46 overtime win at Hermon on Feb. 8.

Her dad, Houlton head coach Shawn Graham, said they will try to continue to try to replace her “by committee” as they did in Saturday’s hard-fought 47-39 victory over upset-minded Mount Desert Island, the eighth seed.

Gray-NG advances to Class B South semifinals
The top-seeded Patriots defeat Freeport, 57-24.

... “They were a team all year who hadn’t played any zone (defense) and they came out and played zone,” GNG Coach Mike Andreasen said. “It was a high–level zone, where they were allowing us to put the ball in the corner and we obliged (them) early on, so our offense was bad. They threw some wrinkles at us and it had its effect.”

The first quarter ended with the Patriots clinging to a 10-9 lead. But Freeport missed all eight of its field-goal attempts in the second quarter and sank just 2 of 7 free throws.

“We just didn’t finish the shots we needed to finish in the open floor, and free throws hurt us,” said Freeport Coach Michael Hart.

Gray-NG grinds down Freeport in Class B South quarterfinals

... You knew he'd make adjustments," Gray-NG coach Mike Andreasen said. "They're a team that I think all year hasn't played any zone, and they came out and played that zone, and it was a high-level zone."

The Falcons (12-8) defenders met the Patriots well outside the 3-point arc, forcing the ball to the corners. That meant not getting the ball to star post player Skye Conley, and no drives by point guard Bri Jordan. Both players were held scoreless in the first quarter.

"We did some good stuff, we changed some things up, and I feel like we did some really positive things on the defensive side of the ball," Freeport head coach Mike Hart said.
