SJ Girls' basketball: Class A playoff preview

... Overview: Leading up to the likely Greely-Messalonskee showdown in the state championship games, the best Class A region tournament games will probably be those without the Rangers and Eagles. For instance, if the seeds hold, the semifinal tilts between the second and third seeds — Brunswick and Marshwood in A South, Skowhegan and Nokomis in A North — should be fun to watch.

It also will be interesting to see how last year’s region champions fare. York, the defending state champion is third in A South, while Lawrence is fourth in A North.

Skowhegan girls are most improved team among North’s five classes

...LeBlanc said early-season wins over Hampden Academy, Brewer and Gardiner paved the way for their 8-0 start and surprising season.

“Those wins gave us the confidence we needed. We lost a lot of close games last year. This season, we’ve won them,” said LeBlanc, who is the University of Maine baseball program’s career all-time saves leader with 19.

Skowhegan has gone 6-3 in games decided by nine points or less including a perfect 6-0 mark in games decided by six or fewer points.

PRELIM: Oceanside knocks off Waterville 48-39
The Mariners shrug off losses in key contests in several sports to Waterville in a Class A North prelim.

...The Mariners led 22-19 at the half, and Waterville tied the game 26-26 on Sadie Garland’s basket with 2:52 left in the third quarter. Oceanside closed the quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 32-26 lead in the fourth. Waterville got no closer than four points the rest of the game. Hope Butler’s basket with 4:18 to play pushed Oceanside’s lead to 40-30, the largest of the game.

With Elise Laslavic in foul trouble early, Sara Dorr came off the bench and grabbed nine boards for the Mariners. Alexis Mazurek added eight points for Oceanside.

Playing her final high school game, Waterville’s 1,000-point scorer Jordan Jabar scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds. Maddy Martin added nine points for the Panthers.

“I like my group. They fight right to the end,” Rodrigue said.

Hot start, finish aids Mariners in upset of Purple Panthers in prelim playoff
Simmons, Butler lead Oceanside offensive charge with double-figure points

... “I thought they played very well,” said Oceanside coach Sam Bragg of her Mariners. “We played a great game against Gardiner [to end the regular season] the other night and I thought we carried over pretty well into tonight. Even though we lost to Gardiner the intensity that I’ve been trying to find all season has finally shown up and it couldn’t have happened at a better time for sure.”

Offensively, the Mariners were keyed by Gabby Simmons, who tossed in 16 points and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the second half to help the visitors pull away.

“She is such a tough kid and she’s struggled as of late with her offensive end,” said Bragg of Simmons. “I thought she played amazing defense tonight and really got after things. And obviously down the stretch I wouldn’t want the ball in anyone else’s hands.”

Simmons said she felt the Mariners “blossomed” at the right time to start their playoff run.
