Mountain valley runs away from Lisbon

... Seniors Ashley Russell and Liza White each recorded double-doubles and the Falcons ramped up the pressure defensively in the second half in a 47-27 triumph against Lisbon. The Falcons have won eight of nine games since a season-opening loss to unbeaten Boothbay.

It was an important game between Mountain Valley (9-2) and Lisbon (6-6), which had entered the action ranked second and eighth, respectively, in Class B South Heal points.

Mountain Valley topples Mt. Abram

... It was Mountain Valley (12-2), ranked second in the Class B South Heal points, that jumped out of the gates on fire and led wire-to-wire. The Roadrunners (7-6) are No. 7 in Class C South. They were forced to scramble and were unable to put it all together.

Mountain Valley established its inside game early on with White (17 points, 12 rebounds) and a 3-pointer by Chelsea Alison at the buzzer an 18-3 lead after the opening quarter,

''Last year, we were known for starting out fast,'' said Russell, who scored five points in the first game against Mt. Abram. ''It's always hard to play in their gym. So, tonight we wanted to blow them out. The fast start helped us mentally.''

Russell fished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

Mountain Valley upsets Monmouth, 60-57

... Emily Laubuaskas drove for a bucket that gave the Falcons a 58-57 lead with less than 20 seconds remaining. The Mustangs had two good looks right under the basket, but a layup by Abbey Allen and a putback by Abby Ferland bounced out.

Mountain Valley’s Liza White grabbed the rebound and then hit two free throws at the other end to make it 60-57. Monmouth called a timeout, but its options were limited, and a heave by Tia Day from beyond halfcourt fell short.

“I think the biggest deal is that we really respect Monmouth’s basketball program,” Mountain Valley coach Ryan Casey said. “They beat us pretty bad down at their place (49-25 on Dec. 15), and we just wanted to compete and contend, and turn it into a basketball game. My kids came with tons of heart, tons of energy, they showed ultimate respect for Monmouth and played their hearts out tonight.”

Definitely wouldn't call this an upset as the title suggests. Two of the top MVC teams and Coach Casey and the Falcons are a team to be watching at tournament time.
