Undefeated Teams

Postby Class C Dad » Fri Jan 19, 2018 8:45 am

Only 4 team remain undefeated as we enter the final weeks of the regular season.

Portland AA
Greely A
Hermon B
Hall Dale C

Which team has the best shot at finishing the season undefeated? Does it really matter if you lose one game if you maintain the number one seed? Is there more pressure on a team entering the tournament with no losses? Look forward to seeing it all play out.

Portland will be undefeated as I've been saying before the start of the season. They're 15-20 points better than whoever is the second best team in the state.

Ask the 2017 Hermon team if tourney seed matters (lost as the #1).

HD will probably have no problem considering the level of competition they play, do they even go out of that conference for games? Portland probably goes undefeated, but 1 game a player gets hot and a few shots don’t fall, someone could potentially trip them up, but I don’t see that really hurting them, they just want to avoid a full EL squad as deep into the North tourney as they can. Hermon still has a couple sketchy games with MDI left, but a loss wouldn’t be a lost season. Greely at seasons start had the toughest schedule to go perfect, they actually go out of conference as well as up a class to play teams...like SoPo. Yet the remaining schedule could be a snoozer. 1 loss for any team during the regular season is never a terrible thing, it’s just something for discussion on here, and more so if it’s considered an upset by our minds. This whole conference scheduling thing really needs to go, those were cool in the 80’s and 90’s with 4 classes, but with 5, now we have AA teams playing B squads and teams in classes playing schedules that aren’t even close to fair compared to other teams. Some squads play an A team twice or more while another team plays a C team worth big points from beating up on the bottom of the class. Then you have teams that play in this conferences like the MVC and really nothing else, no disrespect intended, but having 1 or 2 solid teams and then a bunch of lower level squads playing each other always puts a team in the tourney in the top 5 that gets beat up in the QTR’s or worse, loses a home prelim game from a conference of bigger schools. Please don’t offer up how a school schedules a sweet preseason against the upper classes either. Everyone knows that the exhibition season is in no way a place to compare how they stack up. AA coaches will try rotations and make players run through offensive sets and work on different D’s. SoPo lost at the Red Claws Tourey to Biddo, and Biddo is a decent squad, but SoPo was going 5 in and Out like a middle school team and the reserves played more than the starters.

Go back to the 4 class structure of a few years ago in basketball. It'd make scheduling much easier, games more interesting, retain traditional rivalries and you'd have a true East/West or North/South champion in all classes. Portland v. South Portland in a state final is stupid.

Does HD go out of conference? No, why would they? Isn't that the point of having a conference? They do play 4 B schools though.

Some good comments on all 4 teams
As for Class C South, all the top teams in my opinion are in the MVC with the exception of Waynflete. The MVC does have 4 Class B schools including Spruce Mtn so there is some tough competition in the MVC. It's not HD fault if there are some weaker teams in Class C. Isn't the point of the 5 class system to play schools similar in size so you can compete for a Gold Ball? I think the real question is, will HD, Winthrop, Waynflete or Richmond be able to stay with GSA or any other team that comes out of the North.

My point is, that having conferences is stupid at this point. There are to many teams from different classes in conferences. Greely is in the WMC, can you imagine if they just played in conference? They would face class C schools. As for the MVC, they don’t go out of conference at all and that’s my point. Greely went to the SMAA for games, Hermon to the KVAC (Oceanside), Portland plays as many southernAA schools as their own Northern AA. Having conferences is the dumbest thing in H.S. sports now. It’s just doesn’t make sense anymore.

ClassCDad: Speaking from experience I would say Portland has the best chance of going undefeated thru the regular season and to an undefeated state championship.

It is really better to have lost a game going into the tournament as it is going undefeated again speaking from experience.

If you are undefeated then lose in the tourney you not only lose a game, but also an undefeated season and a championship you were expected to win. If undefeated the players may being to think that they are unbeatable whereas if you are 17-1 going into the tourney they remember the sting of defeat.

My experience with the undefeated twice went 22-0 and once lost in Eastern Maine Finals once when were 20-0 and finished 20-1.
