Unified basketball: Lisbon gets the best of Brunswick

...Lisbon’s Michael Farrington led all scorers with 20 points, while Brunswick’s Nate Hall had 18.

Lisbon’s Cameron Segovia netted 10 points followed by Wes Lucas’ nine. Brunswick’s John Johnson chipped in with eight points for the Dragons, while Chandler Taylor added four.

Lisbon scored quickly, getting a pair of baskets each from Farrington and Segovia to jump out to an 8-0 lead early in the first half.

Brunswick got on the scoreboard with a Taylor basket midway through the opening frame, but Lisbon went on a 12-0 run, capped by a Lynn Feely hoop, before Taylor scored again, ending the run. Lisbon led 20-4 with 6:49 remaining.

Unified basketball: Eddies would like to make it 3-for-3, but goal is more than a gold ball

...But like everyone else in the Maine’s self-proclaimed city of basketball champions, the coaches and their 18 players/partners can’t help but get caught up in the thrill of winning a state championship.

“Our kids know. It’s in the atmosphere around school,” Derosby said, referring to the excitement of the girls’ and boys’ teams winning a state title last Friday. “They’re excited and ready to play.”

The Red Eddies (8-0) are the top seed in the South and host ninth-seeded Gray-New Gloucester (5-3) at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The Patriots won the first tournament game in their program’s history, beating Greely in the preliminary round to take on EL for the first time this season.

Lewiston outduels Lisbon in Unified basketball quarterfinal

LEWISTON — Lisbon’s win streak came to an end Friday at the hands of a determined Lewiston squad.

The Blue Devils, seeded third, defeated the Greyhounds, the No. 6 seed, 42-30 in the South quarterfinals of the Unified basketball playoffs at Lewiston High School.

Lisbon, the defending state Unified champion and three-time regional winner, finished 5-4, while Lewiston (7-2) will face second-seeded Westbrook in a semifinal.

Unified basketball: Eddies hold off pesky Patriots, 42-41

AUBURN — Anyone suffering from tournament withdrawal would have more than gotten their fix from Friday’s Unified quarterfinal between unbeaten Edward Little and its scrappy opponents from Gray-New Gloucester.

The 10th-seeded Patriots nearly rallied from an 18-point first half deficit, finishing the game with a 12-0 run before falling just one point shy as the top-seeded Red Eddies held on for a 42-41 win.

The victory means EL (9-0) will host a regional semifinal at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday against No. 4 Bonny Eagle, which survived a tense quarterfinal of its own, 48-47, over Poland.
