Unified basketball’s fourth season marked by continued growth

While the high school varsity basketball season rounds the midpoint of its 2017-18 schedule, another division of the sport is set to kick off its fourth season next week.

Co-ed unified basketball, which matches students with developmental disabilities — unified student athletes — with non-varsity basketball players without developmental disabilities — unified student partners — to train, compete, and represent their school.

The sport has grown steadily in Maine since its inception in 2015, with 51 teams representing 59 schools beginning preseason practices on Jan. 2.

Unified basketball continues impressive growth at Maine high schools
The sport has grown from 17 to 52 teams since 2015, with six new programs joining this season.

WATERVILLE — On Saturday morning, Grace and Gerry Longley got a spirited wake-up greeting from their son.

A senior at Leavitt High in Turner, Nathan Longley walked into their bedroom – dressed in his basketball uniform – and cheered, “Gooo Leaviiitttttt!”

It was 4 a.m.

“He was all suited up and ready to go,” Gerry Longley said. “It’s really made his high school (experience) complete.”

What Gerry Longley is talking about is Unified basketball – a co-ed sport that combines athletes (high school students with developmental disabilities) and partners (students without disabilities who help sustain the flow of games). The league in Maine has more than tripled in size since its inception four years ago – from 17 teams in 2015 to 52 this season, with six new programs joining for 2018.
