Maine’s 1,000-point club in high school basketball growing quickly
At least 18 high schoolers have surpassed the milestones this winter.

...ome of the seniors did it in just three years, too. Portland’s Terion Moss didn’t play much as a freshman, nor did Windham’s Curtis. Windham senior guard Mike Gilman is only 40 points away from going over 1,000.

“It would be incredible for both Nick and Mike to reach 1,000 points from their sophomore to their senior years,” said Chad Pulkkinen, the Windham boys’ coach. “They’ve been a pretty good staple for us as a 1-2 combo. And the thing with them, I’ve never seen two really good players on the same team be such good friends.”

In an era of defensive basketball, with many teams struggling to score 50 points per game, Portland Coach Joe Russo said the 1,000-point milestone is special.

Mike Gilman-Windham, Matt Fleming-Bangor surpasses the 1,000-point plateau

.. Gilman, a senior guard, needed 26 points to join teammate Nick Curtis in Windham’s 1,000-point club. He got there with 4:26 left in the third quarter.

Bangor junior guard/forward Matt Fleming, who had torched the Eagles for 29 and 45 points in two regular-season games, was just eight points shy of the coveted career mark. Fleming hit 1,000 with 5:14 left in the game after Windham had built an 18-point lead.

“I wasn’t worried about it at all,” Gilman said of the individual goal. “I didn’t expect to get it tonight. I was worried about playing defense and getting a win tonight. I felt good, I hit a couple shots and my shot felt good so if it feels good, I’m just going to keep shooting.”

Bangor Christian point guard earns milestone

...The speedy Grass went 8-for-18 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the foul line. Even though he took 18 shots, he rarely forced a shot trying to reach the milestone. He finished with a game-high four assists and he also had three steals and three rebounds.

“He wasn’t out chucking the ball up like someone who knew how many points they needed to reach 1,000,” said Bangor Christian coach Kevin Reed. “He plays within the flow of our offense. When he gets the basketball, he looks to go (to the basket). When he doesn’t have anything, he pulls it out and runs the set.

“To be honest, for us to be successful, he had to get a lot of shot attempts,” added Reed. “I commend him for being extremely aggressive offensively. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have been where we were.”
