Plenty of holiday high school hoops at the Expo
There will be 25 games, including Portland vs. Deering regular-season contests, scheduled in the Red Claws Christmas Showcase.

...Tuesday’s action is highlighted by a 4 p.m. boys’ game between defending Class AA South champion South Portland and Biddeford, a Class A team; and a 7 p.m. girls’ game between Portland and Greely.

On Wednesday, Class B Yarmouth will try to upset a quality Class AA Cheverus boys’ team in a 5:30 p.m. exhibition game. At 7, old rivals Class A Falmouth and Class B Cape Elizabeth will play a game that counts in the regular-season standings.

Thursday features two showdowns of city schools in regular-season games. The Portland and Deering girls tip off at 7 p.m., followed by those schools in a boys’ matchup.

The Portland boys also will play at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday against Hollis-Brookline of New Hampshire.

George Stevens an intriguing newcomer at Maine Gold Rush tournament
Two-time defending Class C champions are locked in on adding a third title.

...“I don’t think that was their best game, but I think they’re still firing on all cylinders,” said MacArthur, whose team fell to George Stevens, 47-44, in March. “They’re a tough team. They’re not one-dimensional, they play good D, they get up and down the court quite well. … They look good.”

Augusta area basketball fans got a rare chance to see it for themselves at the Maine Gold Rush Invitational Tournament on Tuesday. The 12-team tournament consists mostly of Central Maine squads, but included in that mix this year are the Eagles, who play an hour and 45 minutes away, have won two straight state titles and, with most of the core from those championship squads back, wanted to get an early look at the venue for this year’s Class C final just in case they’re playing for a third.

“We came because we wanted to play on the floor, and we wanted to play against some teams we never get to play against and some good competition,” said Eagles coach Dwayne Carter, whose team opened with a 73-64 victory over A North Erskine Academy. “To play against Class A is good, we try to play against good competition as much as we can. Win, lose or draw, it’s better for us. It makes us better.”

If anyone was at the Augusta civic center Tuesday night to watch Sanford Vs GSA it was a very sad sight to see what transpired. GSA has a 15 point lead and put the JV kids in and Sanford came back to eventually take the lead and win the game and GSA kept those JV plyers in the game. I get that it was just a scrimmage and I understand the ride home that they have, but if you’re going to throw a game at least try to win the game with your varsity athletes. Such a shame. Not to dis credit Sanford as they came back to win the game but cmon man.
