from thur 2/15....

Hermon, GSA loom as ‘B’, ‘C’ favorites; Woodland, Jonesport-Beals, Greenville top contenders in ‘D’

...The path to the Class C North championship seemingly will go through the reigning two-time champions from George Stevens who have put together a fairly remarkable run over the last few years.

Coach Dwayne Carter’s Eagles were 58-2 over the last three seasons entering the final week of the 2018 campaign and 73-6 since current standouts Taylor Schildroth, Max Mattson and Stefan Simmons joined the program as freshmen during the 2014-2015 season.

“We have a bullseye on our back,” said Carter, whose team has lost just one to a Class C opponent during the last three years. “We know it and we’ve gotten used to it so it doesn’t affect us. We just go out and prepare for each game the same way.”

I have seen GSA play MA twice this year. I do not see why people think a certain player on that team can play D1. He is a good kid, except when he makes a 3 he totally grinds my gears by looking at either the opposing crowd or bench and taunts. He is mediocre at best on defense. He is slight in build and also plays a class C North schedule...not really top notch competition. I predict GSA does not win C North...watch out for Houlton to upset them. Let me know if I'm full of crap and explain why. Im open to change my mind.

Unnamed player sounds like a good fit for D1 UMaine

U Maine is DII really....dreadful. He will ride the pine for Husson or a small school in Mass.

If UMaine could attract its best high school talent year in and year out they could be very competitive against D1 schools in the 50 -75 power rankings. Granted, Maine will never be able to field starting 5's like Kentucky that are all potential NBA draft picks, but they would win a lot of games and be overachievers and fun to watch.

Class C South boys bracket is ripe for the taking
Hall-Dale and Winthrop top the seedings, but tough outs stack the field.

• Players to watch: Ashtyn Abbott, Hall-Dale; Alec Byron, Hall-Dale; Cam Wood, Winthrop; Askar Houssein, Waynflete; Zach Small, Richmond; Cooper Chiasson, Dirigo; Kyle Ames, Boothbay; Sean Whalen, Madison; Dalan Hubbard, Traip.

• Matchup we’d like to see: A Hall-Dale and Richmond semifinal would match the top seed against one of the region’s top scorers in Small, and would be the third such game after Hall-Dale eked out a 68-67 win in the final seconds in the regular-season finale.

• We’d be surprised if: The quarterfinals went straight chalk. With a field full of talented teams and no dominant team in it, it’s hard to imagine an upset not tripping up one of the favorites. After all, No. 5 Richmond and No. 7 Madison have already earned wins over No. 4 Dirigo and No. 2 Winthrop, respectively.

• Predicted champion: Hall-Dale
