Caribou Vikings focusing on consistency

CARIBOU, Me (WAGM) - The young Caribou boys team finished with four wins last season. They have already hit that mark this year and are further up in the standings thanks to some wins against some good Class C teams.

Top-ranked Hawks a model of soaring consistency

...The Hawks were the No. 1 team in Class B North last winter before being ousted by No. 4 Orono in the regional tournament semifinals. The Hawks returned all but one reserve from last year’s team, plus added a transfer that has addressed one of the biggest issues from that tournament loss in 6-foot-6 senior Jacob Godfrey, who last year helped Machias win the Class D state championship.

“When we played Orono last year — and I remember this vividly — they killed us on the boards,” said Hermon senior guard Keenan Marseille. “Jacob being here gives us a whole different environment, a whole different everything because he can get all the boards.

“He also gives the rest of us that much more space to do what we want to do as guards, and then we can get him the ball in the post and he’s almost automatic down there as long as his confidence is up.”

Adding Godfrey to a lineup that otherwise averages 6-2 has presented a rangy defensive challenge that no team yet has been able to solve fully as the Hawks have returned to the top of the Heal point ratings.

Mountain Valley spreads its wings, whips Lisbon 57-39

...Michael Pare took over the scoring burden for the Falcons in the third, hitting a trio of 3s and a layup for all of his 11 points. That was half of Mountain Valley’s total for the quarter, and the lead stretched to 49-26 heading into the fourth.

Cam Godbois finished with the hot hand, scoring eight of his team-high 14 points in the fourth.

“You want a team that can get three guys in double digits every night, sometimes four, and that makes a lot things easier,” Danylik said. “You take the burden off one guy, and just have guys go out and play within themselves, do the things that they do well.”

Sautter was able to finally get down low in the fourth, and added his final six points to get to 17, but it was too little, too late for the Greyhounds, who are on the fringe of a playoff spot in Class B South two-thirds of the way through the regular season.

Senior forward scores 35 as Oceanside boys top MCI
...“I thought (Oceanside) coach (Matt) Breen did a nice job in setting some screens and forcing switches,” said MCI coach Josh Tardy. “When we did switch because coach Breen was running a good offense, we had mismatches and (Norton Jr.) carved us. They exposed us on the mismatches, and that’s a good coaching job.”

Lombardo finished with seven points, five in the fourth quarter, for 7-5 Oceanside, which had averaged just 43.7 points in its last three games — two losses to 11-0 Class B North top seed Hermon and one to No. 5 Winslow, now 9-3.

Oceanside’s other two losses are to defending state champion and third-ranked Mount Desert Island, 8-1 entering a key game at Hermon on Saturday night.

York edges Cape Elizabeth, 52-51
The No. 2 team in Class A South pulls out a victory against the top-ranked team in Class B South.
... York was protecting a one-point lead with 9 seconds remaining in Friday’s game against Class B Cape Elizabeth when Bowe took an inbounds pass and drove to the hoop. Linn closed in and stripped Bowe in the paint, the ball landed in the hands of teammate Tim MacDonald, and the Class A Wildcats preserved an exciting 52-51 victory inside Robert E. Butler Gymnasium.

“Coach told me ‘You have him. Don’t let him score,’” Linn said. “So I tried to keep it away from him. They threw a hard screen on me, so I had to get over that. He got the ball, I just played tight and I knew I had help from my team.”

York (9-3) reeled off its third straight win after dropping three consecutive games. MacDonald came off the bench to lead the Wildcats with 16 points, while his younger brother Will scored the go-ahead bucket on a drive with 28 seconds left and finished with 15 points.

“I was down low -- we were in a 1-3-1 (zone) -- so I was the low man,” Tim MacDonald said. “Riley got the ball loose and I just grabbed it and ran it down the other end. It felt great; it felt really good.”
