Top 5 North

1.) Hermon
2.) Washington Academy
3.) Presque Isle
4.) MDI
5.) Caribou

I really have little knowledge of the South Region; will leave those ratings to others till I have a chance to review the teams.

Maranacook off and running to 5-1 start

...As impressive as Maranacook’s record is, it becomes even more so when considering who the Black Bears have played. Maranacook routed Erskine, currently sixth in A North, in the opener, and also has wins over Winslow and Maine Central Institute, currently playoff teams in B North. The one loss came to Oceanside, an A North finalist last year that returns its best player in Michael Norton, and that was by only three points.

So far, Schmidt says, the big reason for the turnaround has been two-fold. The Black Bears were young last year, and this year are more seasoned and physically bigger and stronger, allowing them to carry into many games an athletic advantage they didn’t have a season ago.

“I think the work ethic has always been there for this group,” he said. “They have never quit, they’ve always done what their coaches have asked, they’ve always been competitors. … But it was just really nice to see that physical growth over the last year, and also just the maturity.

Cape Elizabeth turns it on, beats Brunswick
Andrew Hartel scores 14 points as the Capers earn their sixth win.

...“Noah got off to a hot start and we felt good about the first quarter,” Brunswick Coach Todd Hanson said. “But, defensively, (Cape) is very well-coached and very disciplined.

“We hung around, but when (the shots) stopped falling, it went the other way.”

Cape Elizabeth (6-1) has won six straight games, while Brunswick (5-3) is on a three-game losing streak after starting the season hot. This was a rematch of last year’s Class A South quarterfinal, which Cape won 50-49. The Capers have since moved to Class B.

Maranacook boys basketball races past Cony
Freshman Cash McClure scores career-high 25 points, including seven three-pointers.

AUGUSTA — Maranacook freshman Cash McClure fires up 3-pointers with the poise and confidence of a seasoned veteran. Just 5-foot-5 and 105 pounds, he relies on adept ball handling and a quick high-arcing release to beat defenders.

Friday night, McClure had a breakout game before a large spirited crowd at the Cony gymnasium. He finished with seven 3-pointers and a career-high 25 points to lead the Black Bears to an 80-70 victory.

The win leaves Class B South Maranacook at 6-1 while Class A North Cony falls to 4-4.

Gray-NG boys run away from Lake Region

...“We switched to a 2-3 (zone) because they were getting in the paint too much,” Deschenes said.

“The energy in our 2-3 was tremendous,” he added. “We forced some turnovers, got them out of rhythm, we made that run and pushed it to 10-12 (points).

“Our defense really led us to some flow offensively. We’ve been struggling with some offensive flow the last few games, but tonight our defense led the charge.”

It also helped that the Patriots started making shots, including four from beyond the arc in the second quarter. Nick Pelletier made two and Martin and Josiah Rottari each hit one.

“We’re a team where, if we start knocking down shots, we’re going to keep knocking them down,” Martin said. “If we get hot, you can’t stop us.”

Freeport boys hold off Morse in back-and-forth affair

...FREEPORT—When you’re learning how to win and hoping to secure a playoff spot, there’s no such thing as style points.

On a night where it let an early 11-point lead slip away and committed 36 turnovers, Freeport’s resurgent boys’ basketball team could have easily gone down to defeat against the determined Morse Shipbuilders, but in a positive sign of things to come, the Falcons found a way to rise above their struggles and earn another victory.

Freeport, in the midst of its best season in a decade, scored the game’s first nine points and enjoyed a 15-4 advantage, but Morse roared back to pull within 15-12 after a mistake-filled first period, which saw the Shipbuilders commit 13 turnovers and the Falcons 10.

Morse then grabbed the lead on a 3-pointer from junior sharpshooter Tom Warren and held a 28-27 halftime lead.
