CM basketball notes: Final spot in Class A North up for grabs
Gardiner, Messalonskee have playoff shots; Winthrop finds form., Maranacook, [/i]

It’s been a tight race in Class A North boys basketball this season. And it’s coming down to the final day.

One game remains, and the eighth and final playoff spot in the region is up for the taking. Gardiner (7-10) currently occupies the slot, with Brewer (6-11) and Messalonskee (7-10) seated directly behind by 2.037 and 5.9259 Heal points, respectively.

Take a look at the teams’ final games, however, and the plot thickens. Gardiner and Brewer have games against 1-16 opponents in Lincoln Academy and Mt. Blue, respectively, and could potentially swap spots based on their results and the Thursday results of their defeated opponents. Those games will only fetch a handful of Heal points, however, and Messalonskee plays 12-5 Cony. With an upset of the fifth-place Rams, the Eagles likely will have enough points to climb even as high as the sixth spot and shuffle the bottom teams down.

Rarefied status: Welcome to the 500-win club, coach Hart

... And recently, in the span of four days, Hart reached a pair of significant milestones.

On Monday, Hart was announced as an inductee into the prestigious Maine Basketball Hall of Fame: Class of 2018.

And, to top it off, on Thursday night, Jan. 8 against Morse, the hard-nosed play of the Windjammers earned their coach his 500th career victory in a 51-38 road triumph.

Hart began his high school coaching career in the early 1980s and since that time, he has amassed 28 regional playoff appearances, 10 regional championships, six state championships and three undefeated seasons, along with many league crowns. He also is a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, in addition to the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame.

The veteran coach, who always puts his team ahead of individual accolades — despite how deserving they may be — said he is “truly grateful for the opportunity to coach for as long as I have.”

Local teams eye Gold Ball-Northern edition
(Greely, Falmouth )

The Greely boys went 22-0 and won an elusive state title a year ago. Even after the program was hard-hit by graduation, this winter’s team has been every bit that champinoship squad’s equal, which comes as a surprise to many. The Rangers capped their second straight 18-0 regular season with wins last week at York (55-47) and Fryeburg Academy (53-34). Logan Bagshaw went off for 24 points against the Wildcats. In the win over the Raiders, Bagshaw had a team-high 13 points.

“The regular season has been a learning experience,” said Greely coach Travis Seaver. “With last year’s graduating class, we had to change the way we play a bit and redefine roles for players on the floor this year. The kids have responded really well and have continued to work hard every day. They have remained focused throughout by identifying our weaknesses and getting better every day. They are motived and competitive. They are a fun team to coach.”
