Emerging depth helps Bangor to pointworthy victory

...Not only did the win move coach Carl Parker’s club past Windham and into second place in the division behind two-time defending state champion Portland, it marked an example of the gradually emerging depth on the Rams’ senior-less roster.

All-Maine junior forward Matt Fleming was the star of the game, scoring a career-high 45 points overall including 20 of his team’s 24 points in the fourth quarter as Bangor outscored the Eagles 24-20.

But with junior guards Damien Vance and Noah Missbrenner having fouled out, Parker turned to his inexperienced bench and got valuable contributions from junior guard Luke Caruso, junior forwards Carter Khoury and Riley Nason and sophomore guard Nathan Richardson while rallying against a Windham team that led by as many as five points in the fourth quarter.

Scarborough sends Portland to first loss
Nick Fiorillo scores 26 points to lead the Red Storm to a 69-66 win over the two-time defending Class AA state champions.

...“We talk about mental toughness all of the time, and our kids had mental toughness today, and they responded in the fourth quarter,” Scarborough Coach Phil Conley said. “Portland is one of the top teams in the state for a reason, and I think we showed people today that we are a top team, too.”

Fiorillo paced Scarborough (10-3) with 26 points and nine rebounds. Pratt, who went 7 for 10 from the free-throw line, added 18 points and six assists. Brian Austin chipped in with 15 points, including 12 in the second quarter, when the Red Storm outscored the Bulldogs 27-9.

Austin’s biggest play came on the defensive end in the waning seconds. With his team leading 68-66 after Pratt’s free throws, the sophomore stepped in front of Portland star Terion Moss to draw an offensive foul with 3.4 seconds left.

Thornton Academy gets the better of South Portland in playoff rematch

...“Defensively, we played really well as a team,” said Golden Trojans coach Bob Davies. “We rebounded the basketball better in the second half. They missed shots and that was the difference. It’s a new year and it’s kind of a new group of kids. We lost a lot and David got hurt, but that doesn’t mean the other kids can’t play basketball. They waited their turn, they got it and they’re slowly improving.”

Mitchell, best known as the Golden Trojans’ football quarterback, was huge off the bench with 19 points and five rebounds.

“When (Will’s) focused, he’s dynamite for us,” Davies said. “He’s physical and he rebounds. It’s important to have that coming off the bench.”

Bracamonte added 15 points (to go with nine assists, four rebounds and three steals).

Chapman had 14 points (six rebounds and two blocked shots), Jones 11, Pyzynski seven, Labreck six (along with seven boards) and Hart and Lovejoy two apiece.

Edward Little turns over Gorham
AUBURN — In a game that was as sloppy and slushy as the roads outside, Edward Little turned to its suffocating full-court press to clean up the court against Gorham on Tuesday night.

The Red Eddies forced 31 turnovers and made some offensive adjustments in the second half to pull away with a 59-45 win, their fifth in a row.

Ibn Khalid led the Red Eddies (10-3) with 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Darby Shea added 16 points and Wol Maiwen chipped in with 15 points eight rebounds and six steals. Jordan Bretton paced the Rams (6-7) with 14 points.

With a couple weeks remaining to regular season, appears post season will have some great games. I’m bias towards Biddeford for A and see some Saco games. Keep in mind my opinions are based on how teams match up against these two teams. I’ll stick with AA for this post.
I only saw SoPo and Scarborough play once. I’m going to stay away from who is better since I think any of these 3 teams can beat each other. Scarb and SoPo appeared to be above rest early in season. Some of the recent adjustments from TA are making it interesting. I like Hart staying on the court a lot more compared to what I saw 1st game of season. I like the increase in substitutions. If you have the ability to tire another team out, do it. The adjustment that stands out to me is Chapman (spelling?) being on the court. Big impact and I really like watching him. Appears humble and works hard. He was a force in Biddeford vs TA game, but was taken out (?). Because of my bias, I’m hoping TA continues to play well as a team. However, I view games between the top 3 (and BE on a given day) to be coin flips.
I haven’t seen all the teams from north yet, so can’t provide much for thoughts. I’ve seen enough to know the gap between Portland and 2 – 4 in North is greater than parity between 1 – 3 in South.
