Consistency key as Maine Maritime senior tops 1,000 career points

...Instead he used it as motivation, setting the stage for not only an all-conference caliber career at Brewer High School but more recently a noteworthy accomplishment as a senior at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound guard from Holden scored his 1,000th career point last Friday during the Mariners’ 75-60 North Atlantic Conference victory at Lyndon State in Vermont.

Newcomb scored a game-high 19 points in that game to become only the 12th MMA men’s basketball player to achieve the milestone. He also contributed five steals, three rebounds and an assist to the victory.

Former Schenck standout finds comfort zone as freshman on Husson men’s basketball team

...That versatility now is helping the 6-foot-4, 205-pound forward make a relatively quick transition to the rigors of Division III college basketball.

Thompson, a freshman at Husson University of Bangor, broke loose for 21 points, 11 rebounds and two steals Saturday as the Eagles improved to 15-4 overall and 11-1 in the North Atlantic Conference with a 95-73 victory over Green Mountain College.

It was Thompson’s sixth straight start for coach Warren Caruso’s club.

“He’s performed well and looked really comfortable as a starter. He had a really good weekend for us,” said Caruso, whose team visits New Hampshire this weekend for games against New England College and Colby-Sawyer, which both are 9-3 in NAC play and tied for second in the league.

Men's Basketball: Richmond, Gilpin Team for 40 as Bentley Advances with 68-65 NE10 Quarterfinal Win

Richmond, Gilpin Team for 40 as Bentley Advances with 68-65 NE10 Quarterfinal Win

ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Windward School) scored 21 points, junior forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) followed with 19 and senior guard Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) accounted for the 11th and final lead change with 2:14 to play as Bentley University secured a 68-65 win over The College of Saint Rose in the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Basketball Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Bentley, riding a season-best four-game winning streak, will advance to Wednesday's NE10 semifinals where the Falcons will face Saint Anselm College at the Hawks' Stoutenburgh Gymnasium (7 pm).

The Falcons, who are the number three seed out of the Northeast Division, overtook the Southwest's number two seed by limiting the Golden Knights (20-9) to just two points and one basket in seven attempts during the final five minutes.

After a three from Saint Rose senior Mical-Ryan Boyd (Hempstead, N.Y.) gave the home team a 63-58 lead with 5:19 to play, Bentley began its comeback on a jumper in the paint from sophomore forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Northampton Williston School) with 4:53 left. Two jumpers by Richmond, the first with 4:04 left and the second with 3:17 to play, made it a 6-0 run and a 64-63 Falcon lead.

MBB: Christian McCue Earns Post Season Honor from the Little East Conference | McCue led the Huskies in scoring #GoHuskies

Christian McCue Earns Post Season Honor from the Little East Conference

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team has been selected to the 2017 All-Little East Conference second team.

Christian is a fantastic leader and naturally places a huge amount of responsibility on his shoulders," noted veteran head coach Karl Henrikson. "Nobody plays harder on each possession to try and help the team win. He demonstrated a tremendous work ethic and played with intensity throughout the season."

Transferring to Southern Maine from McGill University (Canada), McCue joined the Huskies in the 2016-2017 season. McCue had a breakout season as a senior, averaging a team-leading 16.1 points per game while shooting 42.2 percent (127-for-301) from the field and a solid 35.2 percent (50-for-142) from three-point range, adding 1.3 assists and 1.7 rebounds per game. Finishing seventh in the Little East Conference in points per game, McCue's 50 three-point field goals were sixth in the conference, while his 85.1 free throw percentage (114-for-134) was second.
