That seems strange too. News articles say Gibson chose Bentley at the last minute after the UMass Lowell coach was honest with him and told him he wouldn't see much playing time and then he didn't get much playing time there either. Obviously some kids are getting a lot of playing time at Bentley. Maybe your game and skills have to match their style?

Would Bouchard have played more at UMaine? Especially this year?

hoops88: I don't think so, but Nick Mayo definitely would.

WAS IT harder to make a Maine college team roster in the 50's when I played college basketball then it is today? As there were less college teams in Maine in the 50's then there are today.

More teams more chances to make a roster.

So if there are 130 boy's high school teams in Maine and say there are 3 seniors average per team (and that is a very conservative number) that means there are about 390-400 seniors graduating each year possibly looking to play college basketball.

However, it could be close as more out of staters are on Maine college rosters today then in the 50's.

Maybe its a TIE and it's about the same degree of difficulty.

There is no doubt that is true, but I guess I would expect that a Maine, or even a Massachusetts in the case of Gibson, Mr. Basketball winner would be able to play a fairly dominant role in Div II unless there was something about the style of play in these schools that is not a good match for these players that were basically lauded as the best high school basketball players from their State.

I think it just goes to show that success at the high school level won't always translate to success in college.

Another thing to consider is the importance of getting an opportunity in college. Gibson played behind Tyler McFarland for 3 years. TMac started every single game of his entire career, averaged well over 30 minutes a game, and is Bentley's all time leading scorer. There weren't many minutes available for other big men.

Jasper Grassa who graduated from Bentley in 2014 ended up being the all time leader in 3 pointers made and started every game during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He talked about how he had an opportunity at the right time. When he was a freshman, he was playing behind seniors Mike Quinn and Tom Dowling who were both fantastic guards. When they graduated, Bentley was fairly weak at the guard position and Jasper got a chance to prove himself. He ended up being Bentley's second leading scorer as a sophomore (behind Winthrop's Sam Leclerc) and his spot was solidified.

You look at Bentley now at the forward position and you've got Brandon Wheeler who is one of my all-time Bentley favorites playing at a very high level. Zach Gilpin and Chris Hudson have both come a long way over the past year...

Of course we can only speculate about the decisions of a coach, but my guess is that Bouchard's more limited minutes this year might have more to do with the ability of their other forwards than anything Kyle is doing wrong or is unable to do.
