Gilpin, Coyne looking to make sophomore jump for Bates

...“We knew each other pretty well,” Coyne said. “We were pretty close (by that official visit). And I don’t think it was something we like set up, but once we realized that it was a thing that could happen … it was just kind of like a plus at that point. We’ve played well together before. Our games match each other well. So that was just like a bonus. I don’t think it was like a pre-determined thing.”

The two players, both guards, shared the court at times as freshmen for the Bobcats last year, though Gilpin was largely a starter and Coyne came off the bench. The 6-foot-3 Gilpin averaged 5.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 24.3 minutes per game last year, starting 21 of 25 games. The 6-foot Coyne poured in 7.0 points and 1.2 rebounds a game, and made 1.7 3-pointers per contest.

“I think their first year they exceeded the expectations, given the amount of talent I thought we had last year,” Bates coach Jon Furbush said.

“Coming in I really didn’t know what to expect. Playing time wasn’t really something I talked to Coach about coming it. It was just I wanted to get in, do whatever I could to help the team,” Gilpin said. “So I was a little surprised by how many minutes I got, but I was excited about the opportunity to (come here) and play as much as I did.”

UMF will play faster in 2017-18

...Meader will be counting on several key players, including Riley Robinson — a 6-foot-3 sophomore forward — to make things happen on the court.

“Riley Robinson certainly has improved his body. He has shot the ball very well in preseason,” Meader said. “He handles the ball a lot for us. He is the trailer coming down the court. He can guard a bigger player inside so Riley is one of our major go-to players.”

Meader will turn to several players for perimeter shooting and rebounding such as Issac Witham — a sophomore 6-foot guard — and Bill Ruby — a sophomore 6-foot-3 forward.

“Issac Witham is maybe our best shooter,” Meader said. “Very good perimeter scorer and point guard. Plays defense. He is just solid.

“Billy Ruby, who got hurt early last year for and was out the majority of the year, is really back to full speed. He is really playing well. His shot has improved. He has good quickness taking the ball to the hoop. He will rebound the ball. He is a pretty good rebounder. “

Carlos Gonzalez eager to lead young Thomas men’s basketball
Lone returning senior brings stability to Terriers.

...“I feel like I have some responsibilities. I’ve been through it,” Gonzalez said after a recent practice. “We have other guys who have been through it as well. I just feel my job is to lead them as we all work together.”

A 6-foot-7, 240-pound center from Lewiston, Gonzalez will try to build off a season in which he was named second team all-North Atlantic Conference, and help the Terriers contend for the conference championship against a very talented Husson team. Thomas opens the season Friday when it hosts the University of Maine at Machias in the first game of the Charlie Ryan Classic. Tip off is at 5:30 p.m.

“Everything we do is going to go through Carlos,” Thomas head coach Geoff Hensley said. “He’s always doing the right things on and off the court. I wish I could have a team of Carloses every year at Thomas. It would make my job a lot easier.”

Big game for Zach Gilpin last night against Stonehill last night with 23 points! Chris Hudson finished with 6 points and 8 rebounds, and Kyle Bouchard had 4 points and 4 rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench! Mainers continuing to play a huge role for the Falcons! Bentley is a young team but very talented. I think they can be an NCAA tournament team. I imagine such a young team will hit a couple bumps in the road early in the season but look out for them in February and March!

Also for those who don't know, Keegan Hyland is working as an assistant coach for Le Moyne. His brother Tanner is a senior on the team average 5 points a game in 10 minutes off the bench if their first 3 games. It sounds like Le Moyne has lots of depth and could be a contender for the NE-10 title. They managed to beat D1 Siena in their preseason exhibition.
