Greenville boys cruise past Pine Tree in ‘D’ South quarterfinal

... The top-seeded Lakers pounded the ball inside and pounded Pine Tree Academy 63-37 in a quarterfinal contest at Augusta Civic Center.

“That was not our best effort,” Greenville coach Bill Foley said. “But we’ll chalk it off to long layoff, I guess.”

The Lakers (18-1) hadn’t played in nearly two weeks, and had to wake up early for the 10 a.m. tip. But thankfully for them, Devin Boone was an early-riser, and he was rising up over smaller Breakers players all game long.

Seacoast Christian boys eliminate Forest Hills in ‘D’ South quarterfinals

... The No. 4 Tigers, Class D champs in 2013 and 2015, ran out of gas against Seacoast Christian of South Berwick, which pulled away late for a 70-55 victory in quarterfinal action at Augusta Civic Center on Monday morning.

It was a four-point game heading into the fourth quarter, but the fifth-seeded Guardians (12-7) quickly extended the lead to nine on an opening-possession layup by Jesse Towne and a three-point play by Jet Archer.

Three-pointers by Forest Hills guards Kenn Vito Cruz and Parker Desjardins cut the deficit to 52-45 less than three minutes into the final frame, but Seacoast Christian coasted from there, hitting 15 of 21 free throws in the quarter.

... Archer finished with 17 points, while his brother Sky – who stands 6-1 – scored 21 to push the Guardians (12-7) into the regional semifinals Wednesday against top-seeded Greenville (18-1).

“We executed,” Sky Archer said. “We did what we wanted to do out there.”

Kenn Vito Cruz, who said he had never played organized basketball before moving to Maine from California two years ago, scored 23 points to pace the Tigers (12-7).

Guard play helps Central Aroostook boys defeat Jonesport-Beals in ‘D’ quarterfinal

Ben Thomas, a 5-foot-7 sophomore, scored a game-high 18 points and 5-7 junior Caleb Harris scored six of his nine points consecutively late in the third quarter to give the Panthers the lead for good.

Those backcourt contributions helped coach Jason Woodworth’s club offset the defense applied against 6-1 senior center Zach Crouch, who scored 13 points but was limited to three field goals by Jonesport-Beals’ frontcourt duo of 6-3 junior Isaiah Faulkingham and 6-foot classmate Austin Grant

“They were guarding Zach Crouch pretty well,” said Thomas. “They were trapping Zach right away so we knew we’d have to step up.”

32-point blitz propels Southern Aroostook boys past GHCA in ‘D’ quarterfinal

...But as the top-ranked Warriors displayed during a 73-50 Class D North quarterfinal victory over No. 8 Greater Houlton Christian Academy at the Cross Insurance Center on Monday, that offensive might is based in significant part on defensive tenacity.

Coach Bill McAvoy’s club forced 21 first-half turnovers by the Eagles, which helped Southern Aroostook at one point score a remarkable 32 consecutive points while building a 49-15 halftime lead.

“I knew we had to come out and press them and that’s what we did, we forced turnovers,” said SACS guard Jackson Mathers, one of five starting seniors for the Warriors.

A.R. Gould overwhelms Valley in D South semifinal
Bears pull away in 2nd half to reach regional final.

AUGUSTA — A.R. Gould senior Tyrese Collins has emerged as one of the more dynamic players in this year’s Class D South tournament.

The 5-foot-5 guard has been scoring seemingly at will, inside and out. Wednesday morning, Collins scored 15 of his game-high 27 points in the third quarter as the second-seeded Bears pulled away from No. 5 Valley en route to a 76-61 semifinal victory.

The win puts Gould (17-3) into the regional final Saturday against top-seeded Greenville at the Augusta Civic Center.

Tourney Report: Machias Boys Rise in 2nd Half to Reach Regional Final
And one of those winning teams is Machias. The boys had a bit of a tough start against Easton but took control in the 2nd half.

Tim Throckmorton talked to some of the guys after the game.

Explosive second half powers Machias boys past Easton in D North semi

... Noah Hanscomb gave Easton some life early in the third by drilling a perimeter shot to make it a one-point game, but Grant ignited the Bulldogs’ blitz with a corner 3-pointer and a 12-foot pullup, and Easton made just two field goals the rest of the period.

“Coach always talks the first three-five minutes are the most important,” Grant said.

Machias’ combination of length and athleticism combined to wear down the Bears as the half wore on, as their full-court pressure forced Easton into hurried passes and led to fast-break opportunities, including a Mersereau dunk that ignited the Bulldogs’ crowd.

“Anytime one of them can have a dunk, it ups our game,” said Grant, who was 3-for-6 from 3-point range.
