PREVIEW: D South boys preview: Hot Greenville favorite in region
Lakers start 5 players who stand at least 6-feet tall.

... Greenville lost the season opener at Machias but hasn’t lost since. With five starters standing at least 6-feet, Greenville is the biggest team in the field. Defending state champion Valley won seven straight games to open the season, but struggled down the stretch, going 4-7 over the final 11 games.

“We’ve just got to play as a team. We have to make sure we have intensity and are ready to play,” Valley coach Curtis Miller said. Miller’s Cavaliers face a Vinalhaven team it swept early in the season. Senior Austin Cates leads the Cavs, while Cody Hamilton is a scoring threat for the Vikings.

“They’re a good team.,” Miller said of Vinalhaven. “They’ll be ready to go.”

A young Forest Hills team suffered one loss in its final 10 games, to Greenville. The Tigers face an unknown opponent in Seacoast Christian, which reached the regional final last season.

Valley pulls away from Vinalhaven in D South boys quarterfinal
Joey Thomas scores 18 points for No. 3 Cavaliers.

... Hamilton, who presented some matchup problems in paint, hit a few tough baskets inside and Max Stanley connected on two pull-up jumpers as the Vikings used a 14-4 run to grab a 14-11 lead.

But that would be the biggest lead of the game for Vinalhaven, which couldn’t slow Valley in transition and struggled to contain the outside shooting of Brown, Thomas and company.

The Vikings led 18-15 after the first quarter but Valley took over the game to start the second. A pair of Cates buckets, two free throws from Keegan Farnham and a tough drive to the basket for two by Ames — who split as pair of defenders with a nifty move — pushed the Cavs ahead for good at 23-19.

Gould takes down Temple in D South
Bears have too much firepower for Bereans in 2nd half.

AUGUSTA — In the end, there was just too much firepower in the A.R. Gould Academy lineup.

Tyrese Collins scored 36 points and the second-seeded Bears pulled away in the second half to a 76-63 win over No. 7 Temple in the Class D South quarterfinals on Saturday morning at the Augusta Civic Center.

Gould faces No. 3 Valley, a winner over Vinalhaven earlier in the day, on Wednesday morning in the regional semifinals.

Machias boys hold off stubborn Bangor Christian in ‘D’ quarterfinal

... The Bulldogs weathered a Patriots’ storm early, as Bangor Christian’s perimeter play enabled it to build an 18-7 lead early in the second quarter.

But Machias put the clamps down defensively and started using its size to its advantage, holding BC to no field goals over the final 6:54 of the opening half in taking a 26-20 lead.

Mark Anthony jumpstarted that surge with a perimeter shot and a 12-footer.

“Mark hit some big shots and that got us really into it,” said Bulldogs junior center Jacob Godfrey, who posted 18 points and 11 rebounds. “We started playing together as a team.”

Easton boys defeat Wisdom in ‘D’ North quarterfinal

... “That’s been our motto since the start,” Flewelling said, “you’ve got to push it until the end.”

Jordan Doody was Easton’s other double-digit scorer with 15 points while Hunter Brown contributed eight points and seven rebounds, including four offensive boards.

While the scrappy Pioneers (8-9) kept battling throughout the contest, they just did not have the size to match up with Easton.

“They’re a bunch of competitors,” Flewelling said. “They definitely gave it their all and gave us a good game. We’ve played against them since middle school.”

CLASS D BASKETBALL: Forest Hill’s Amero has hands full
Longtime coach is leading both boys and girls basketball teams.

... There are several logistical factors that will help Amero coach both teams, and in this case, it helps to coach the basketball teams of a small high school.

“Our boys and girls team travel together already, and we spend six hours a night on average on the bus,” Amero said. “It’s one of those things where, we know each other well, they know my (playing) style. (The girls) practice is always prior to the boys practice……It’s a small school — 50 kids — so we all know each other pretty well.”

Still, both Tiger teams will be tested early in the Class D South playoffs. The boys team is scheduled to play No. 5 seed Seacoast Christian at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Augusta Civic Center. Aside from the early game time, the Guardians are a team the Tigers did not see during the regular season.
