Yarmouth isn't as good as I was led to believe. MDI should beat Wells. GSA is the best team in B, C or D.

Wells stuns Yarmouth in regional final, heads to states for first time since 1984

PORTLAND—Five years ago, the Yarmouth boys’ basketball team, saddled with a long state championship drought, upset favored, powerhouse Falmouth in a regional final, then went on to win the Class B state title.

Saturday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Arena, the Clippers were on the other side of the coin.

Yarmouth, the top seed in Class B South, met No. 3 Wells, a squad appearing in its first regional final since 1984, and after a pair of decisive regular season wins over the Warriors, was viewed as a decided favorite.

But a happy ending for the Clippers wasn’t to be.

In fact, the ending was downright gutwrenching.

Defense leads MDI past Orono for ‘B’ North boys championship

... The victory marked the third straight tournament game that coach Justin Norwood’s club held its opponent to fewer than 40 points, with a blend of persistent full-court pressure and position-based half-court defense yielding an average of just 35.6 points per postseason outing.

“We’ve been talking since about midway through the season that our full-court defense needs to be what wears people down and then we’ll finish them in the half-court,” said Norwood, who played on MDI’s freshman team the last time the program won a regional crown in 1995.

“We pressed the whole game today — we didn’t throw as many traps because on a bigger court it’s harder — but we just felt like just getting up on them and making them think about it is mentally wearing on teams. At least I hope it is. That’s the plan.”

Mario, Yarmouth was an excellent team, I have watched them on a number of occasions this year. What you saw on Saturday was not indicative of how they've performed at their peak. They had terrible possessions, took poor shots, were out played and out hustled and just didn't show up to play. Wells controlled the tempo, worked to find the best shot, and played like a team willing to do everything in their power to secure a win. Teams need to show up and be willing to out work their opponent. You can't leave anything in the tank when you walk off the court.. I would be willing to bet that Yarmouth kids will kick themselves for not doing more when they had the chance.

HoopHopeful that was a great post and so true. Wells just wanted that game more, and had a great game plan to push the ball inside off of the dribble drive on offense and create fouls off the Yarmouth bigs. On D they just sat back conserved energy and, doubled the Yarmouth bigs when the ball did get there created havoc. They also dared Yarmouth to beat them from the outside but the Wells guards are quick to get out and, defend. I really think it came down to Wells held there poise in this game and, stuck to the game plan. Wells is peaking at the rite time MDI will have there hands full I haven't seen them play but for Wells to beat Yarmouth says a lot.

After watching Wells play I agree that they just out hustled Yarmouth and played a smart game. From my perspective MDI matches up well with them. If wells tries to double down MDI should get good shots on the perimeter and they have four starters who won't hesitate to shoot the three. I also think MDI is playing exceptional defense, mixing it up their full court pressure with shutdown half court defense, especially on ball screens and dribble drives which I saw wells do a lot of. In the northern championship it felt like Orono had maybe 3 open looks in the whole game; they had to earn every point and were limited to 11 field goals. I expect another low scoring grind it out game and I'm picking MDI for their overall depth and defense.
