Riley Swanson named MVP of the “B” North tournament

Riley Swanson, one of nine seniors who guided Mount Desert Island to its first regional crown since 1995, was named MVP of the “B” North tournament, while senior forward James Mersereau earned top honors in Class D after similarly leading Machias to its first North/East title in 22 years

Class B State Championship

MDI set for rematch with Wells in search of first boys hoops title

MOUNT DESERT - Just a few months after MDI fell to Wells in the football state title game, the Trojans have another shot to knock off the Warriors, but this time on the hardwood. More importantly, though, is the program's chase to bring its first ever gold ball back to a community in love with the sport.

Wells has another Gold Ball meeting with MDI
Months after Wells crushed MDI for the football title, the schools meet again for the Class B basketball championship.

... But you can’t ignore the obvious.

It was just over three months ago that a powerful Wells football team crushed MDI 44-0 to win the state Class C title. Now they meet on hardwood, with both basketball teams having starters who were key football players.

“I know they’re going to be wanting revenge for the football season, and I just want to take it right to them and hopefully get that second Gold Ball,” said Wells senior small forward Owen Berry, who played quarterback for the Warriors last fall.

Along with Berry, point guard Riley Dempsey (running back), guard Keegan Reidy (defensive back) and power forward Deandre Woods (defensive end) are basketball starters who were key members of the football team. Reserve forward Tyler Bridge also played football.

MDI shuts down Wells to win ‘B’ boys basketball state title

... Coach Justin Norwood’s club used a run of 17 consecutive points between the end of the first half and early in the third quarter to pull away from the Warriors.

Junior guard Andrew Phelps scored 16 points and Graham Good — one of nine seniors on the MDI roster — added 15 points, 13 rebounds and five steals — to lead the Trojans’ to the most significant victory in school history.

“It’s crazy what you can accomplish with hard work and just being dedicated throughout the season and offseason,” said Phelps. “I don’t even realize what’s happened yet.”

MDI beats Wells to win Class B title
The Trojans win their first state title since 1965.

... “It was definitely talked about at the school,” said Good, a linebacker on the gridiron and a power forward on the hardwood, “but we stayed focused on what we had to do. We knew we had to come out hot, and that’s what we did.”

MDI forced three turnovers and jumped to a 10-0 lead, holding Wells scoreless for more than six minutes.

Tyler Dewey finally ended the Wells shutout with a 3-pointer from the right corner.

“They play really good defense,” Wells Coach Troy Brown said. “We knew that coming in. I just didn’t realize how good it was. It was better than I thought.”

Championship blood runs in MDI families

... High schools in individual MDI towns closed in 1968 when the current combined school open.

Back on March 2, 1957, Jim Carroll won a gold ball for Pemetic High School nearly 60 years to the day prior to his grandson’s team victory.

The ’57 Pemetic Indians defeated the Old Orchard Beach High School Gulls 64-50 in the “medium” class at Colby College in Waterville. In those days, teams were broken down into small, medium and large classes.

“I remember [the state championship] very well,” said Jim Carroll. “We were playing in most important game in the world. Colby was playing West Point in hockey, and we played Old Orchard.”
