MDI boys beat Central, earn berth in ‘B’ North championship

... “To be able to play in the championship is something kids dream of when watching basketball,” coach Norwood said.

MDI was paced by Riley Swanson (17 points, 5 rebounds), Graham Good (12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals) and Andrew Phelps (10 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists).

“This is so awesome,” said Swanson, a senior forward for the Trojans. “Our group has never made it this far. In my four years, we’ve either lost in the quarterfinals or semifinals, so this is pretty special.”

Ethan Mailman led Central with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and also grabbed four rebounds and made a steal. Dylan Gray added eight points, three rebounds and two assists, and Caleb Shaw posted seven points, two rebounds and a steal.

Orono boys dominate inside, knock off Hermon in ‘B’ semifinal

... Hermon (17-3) went 0-for-2 from the foul line in the second half and got outscored 17-0 from the foul line in the game.

Orono started four seniors while Hermon didn’t have one in its starting lineup. All five Orono starters were at least 6-foot-2, while only one Hermon starter stood over 6-foot-1 — standout 6-foot-3 freshman Isaac Varney.

“We pride ourselves on how much time we spend in the weight room. That helps us bang down low and grab rebounds for second and third chance opportunities. And I thought our experience did show a little bit,” said senior forward Keenan Collett, who scored 10 points and was one of four Red Riots in double figures.

“We’re big. That’s one thing we definitely have. And we’re aggressive,” said senior forward Jake Koffman, who posted 15 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

No. 1 Yarmouth rolls by Oak Hill in Class B South semifinals
The Clippers take a big early lead and defeat the Raiders 79-49 to reach the regional final.

... The Clippers scored five seconds into the game, put up 30 points in the first quarter and forced 31 turnovers in advancing to the regional championship game for the second consecutive year.

“To come out on this floor with that kind of play in the first eight minutes was more than I could have expected,” said Yarmouth Coach Adam Smith. “I knew I was going to get the effort. I just didn’t know how well we would jell and play on this floor in the semis.

“The energy was so good, and in high school guys will feed off that energy. I think it affected Oak Hill and made us rise in our game a little bit. It was a perfect situation for us.”

Alek Medenica led Yarmouth with 23 points. Gibson Harnett added 19 points, and Nolan Hagerty filled up the state sheet with nine points, nine assists, seven rebounds, six steals and two blocks.

Marcus Bailey led Oak Hill with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks, while Evan Boston added 10 points.

Wells rallies to ground Spruce Mountain in B South boys' semifinal

... The Warriors started to control the boards, too, en route to a big 24-13 advantage, including 10-2 on the offensive glass.

"Our defense and our rebounding was bad. Our decision-making wasn't very good," Spruce Mountain coach Scott Bessey said. "I thought Austin was dynamic in the first half, but those gaps, those blow-bys that he was getting in the first half, they did a good job, they weren't there in the second half. Offensively, we struggled big-time in the second half. Credit to them. They got after us. They were physical."

Wells rallies, edges Spruce Mountain
The Warriors, seeking their first regional title since 1984, advance to the Class B South final.

When the game is on the line, Wells boys’ basketball coach Troy Brown knows which player he can count on most.

With his team down by a point and 17 seconds left in a Class B South semifinal Thursday night against Spruce Mountain, Brown called a timeout and set up a play for Owen Berry.

“(Owen) is a gamer,” Brown said. “I thought we’d have a better opportunity of getting him to the rim if we weaved one time, and he could try to turn the corner. But he didn’t even turn – he just took it.”

Berry, a senior forward, hit a jumper in traffic with 8.8 seconds left, giving No. 3 Wells a 53-52 win over the second-seeded Phoenix at Cross Insurance Arena.
