Winslow boys rally past MCI to reach Class B North quarterfinals
No. 6 Black Raiders will face No. 3 Central on Friday in Bangor.

... “We just knew we had to play. We know we have to play our brand of basketball to come back in that game,” said Winslow senior guard Spencer Miranda, who scored nine of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to help lead Winslow’s comeback. “We knew we could do it. We’ve got great guys. We’ve got scorers, we’ve got defenders.”

No. 11 MCI (6-13) led 36-27 on a Caleb Romanov layup with 6:35 to play, and the Huskies were living up to Winslow coach Jared Browne’s billing as the best six-win team in the state. The Huskies still led, 39-32, with five minutes to play when a Miranda 3-pointer sparked the Black Raiders.

“To Winslow’s credit, they made some big plays. They’ve shown that all year, that they can score in bunches and that they’ve got unlimited range,” MCI coach Josh Tardy said. “They splashed us. We were preparing for them to make a run, and the fact of the matter is, they made some big shots.”

MDI boys use stellar defense in ‘B’ quarterfinal win over Belfast

... “We pride ourselves on our defense,” said MDI coach Justin Norwood. “We press full-court but we really make our money in our half-court defense and that’s what won the game tonight.”

Belfast standout senior guard Zane Bielenberg scored a game-high 16 points but he had to work hard for all of his points as the Trojans constantly surrounded him.

He said MDI was one of the best defensive teams they’ve played.

“They always had a hand up and they always had a help defender,” said Bielenberg.

Mailman delivers as Central boys beat Winslow in ‘B’ quarterfinal

... The Black Raiders had trouble finding their perimeter touch in the second half after senior forward Jack Morneault picked up his fourth foul, then subsequently fouled out.

That provided more room for the 6-foot-5 Mailman, who finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting and also provided eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

“He can do that,” Donovan said of Mailman’s ability to take over a game.

Central received solid guard play from seniors Caleb Shaw, who contributed 16 points, and Andrew Speed (5 rebounds), while senior forward Dylan Gray finished with eight points and 10 rebounds along with four blocks.

Central finishes off Winslow boys in B North
Black Raiders' late comeback falls just short in Bangor.

... Less than 24 hours prior to Friday’s game, Winslow rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to earn a preliminary round win over Maine Central Institute. The Black Raiders went cold midway through the third quarter, scoring just eight points the rest of the game, but coach Jared Browne said any lingering fatigue from Thursday’s tough game wasn’t a factor.

“I’m not going to chalk that up to (Thursday) night. We’re good players. We should be able to play and make shots whenever,” Browne said. “Give Central credit for defending us, closing out on our shooters. They’re very well coached.”

The biggest game-changer was foul trouble for Winslow junior center Jack Morneault, who picked up his fourth foul with 4:38 left in the third quarter. At the time, the Black Raiders led, 33-25, and Morneault had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

PREVIEW: Despite late-season slump, Trojans are ‘B’ frontrunners

... In contrast to MDI, the Hawks are probably the youngest team in Class B, but will be a threat due to their disciplined style, implemented by veteran coach Mark Reed, and gritty defense. They have surrendered more than 60 points in a game only once and give up an average of 44 ppg.

“We are a long, athletic team and we use that to our advantage,” Marseille said. “Defensively our goal is to back up our teammates. That is [coach Reed’s] number one goal he has preached throughout the season.”

Marseille, one of the top guards in the league, averages 14.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3 assists. Isaac Varney has had an outstanding freshman campaign, averaging 13.6 ppg and 7.8 rebounds per game.
