Perfect Rangers dominate Messalonskee, earn coveted Gold Ball

AUGUSTA—Prior to Saturday afternoon’s Class A boys’ basketball state final, the Greely Rangers were waiting to take the Augusta Civic Center floor and they were chomping at the bit.

For good reason.

The Rangers were rarin’ to go because they knew that their date with destiny awaited and did they ever embrace the moment.

Like they have all winter.

After an 18-0 regular season and an impressive run through the Class A South tournament field, Greely, led by title-starved senior standouts Jordan Bagshaw, Matt McDevitt and Ryan Twitchell, delivered an immediate knockout blow to the Cinderella Messalonskee Eagles and started the party early.

Greely boys thump Messalonskee for Class A boys state title

... Greely also held Eagles standout Nate Violette scoreless in the opening half thanks to the defensive efforts of Shane DeWolfe, who guarded Violette all over the court.

“We hadn’t seen him during the year. We watched some film the last couple weeks,” said Seaver. “We tried to make his game difficult. Shane’s one of the best defenders in the state. He draws the toughest player every single night. Shane did an awesome job on him.”

Three Greely players scored in double figures as Jordan Bashaw registered 17 points and Ryan Twitchell 10, while McDevitt also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

“A great team effort tonight,” said Seaver. “All of our five starters have been the high scorer this season, that’s what makes us so dangerous and so hard to guard.

Greely boys overwhelm Messalonskee in Class A championship
McDevitt scores 23 as Rangers cap undefeated season with 59-43 win

... Mr. Maine Basketball semifinalist Matt McDevitt scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter, staking the Rangers to a double digit lead, on the way to a 59-43 win. The win capped an undefeated 22-0 season for Greely and gave the school its first boys basketball state title since it won Class B in 1998. Messalonskee ended the most successful season in program history with a 16-6 record.

“When it came down to it, when we went out, we were ready to play. I think when the game started, we were a little bit in shock, as far as being in this situation. By the time we understand the surroundings and got back to the game plan, (Greely) had huge plays,” Messalonskee coach Peter McLaughlin said. “We lost sight of our principles and what we were doing and what got us here. We talked all week about playing defense, and rotations and taking away things. We didn’t do that today. That’s an unbelievable team over there.”

Greely rolls to Class A state championship
The Rangers cap a perfect season by defeating Messalonskee 59-43.

... “We’ve been talking about Gold Ball dreams since maybe the summer,” McDevitt said. “We knew that we had the capability of doing it. It just feels great to be here and actually do it.”

McDevitt had plenty of help. Fellow senior starters Jordan Bagshaw (17 points on 7-of-12 shooting) and Ryan Twitchell (10 points, 10 rebounds) each took their turn in the spotlight. Bagshaw scored eight points in the second quarter as Greely stretched its lead from 18-7 after the first eight minutes to 36-10 at halftime. Twitchell scored six points in the third quarter, when the lead peaked at 53-19 on a Bagshaw basket late in the quarter.

Greely dominated the glass (31-13 rebounding edge) and held Messalonskee to 9-of-30 shooting through three quarters, shutting down the Eagles’ top tandem of James Kouletsis (eight points) and Nate Violette (six points). Shane DeWolfe, Greely’s defensive specialist, checked Violette.
