BDN Class A north All Tourney Team

Senior guard Nathan Violette of Messalonskee High in Oakland earned the Warner Award for the Class A North tourney held at the Augusta Civic Center.

... In Class A, Violette was part of a dynamic Messalonskee backcourt that led the Eagles to their first regional title. He averaged 19.7 points during postseason play and scored eight of his 25 points in overtime of the semifinals as coach Peter McLaughlin’s club outlasted No. 8 Skowhegan.

In the championship game, Violette scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter to help Messalonskee defeat 2016 champion Oceanside.

Messalonskee basketball fans eager for Saturday’s finals double feature
Eagles boys and girls teams playing in Class A state championships.

... “You can ask people if they’re going to the games. Someone who’s never gone to a game before, and they’re saying yes,” said junior Conor Ferguson, who along with Charette and senior Tanner Burton is a ringleader of the Eagles Nest, Messalonskee’s student fan section.

When you include the athletes Messalonskee is sending to the New England high school indoor track and field championships on Saturday, excitement around Eagles athletics is high.

“That’s adding to the fuel to how hyped up we’re getting. Now that we have all these winning teams, it’s pretty exhilarating,” senior Jared Handley, who plays drums in the school’s pep band, said.

Messalonskee title run remembered for one frantic minute
Eagles kept alive by improbable comeback against Skowhegan.

... Messalonskee won the Class A North with a 61-40 win over Oceanside in the regional final, but without one of the best comebacks in recent tournament memory, the Eagles wouldn’t have even made it that far. In the regional semifinals, No. 5 Messalonskee trailed No. 8 Skowhegan, which upset undefeated top-seed Medomak Valley in the quarterfinals, by five points with one minute to play.

The Eagles rallied to tie Skowhegan in the closing seconds on a James Kouletsis basket in the final seconds, before winning in overtime. This is a look at how Messalonskee completed the improbable comeback to advance to the regional championship game, and from there, the first state game in team history.

One class ‘A’ school hasn’t had two basketball teams playing for a state title since 1996.

Messalonskee pulled it off this year. This afternoon in Oakland there was a pep rally for the teams in the gym.

Messalonskee boys brace for undefeated for Greely
Eagles face toughest yet in Class A state title game.

... In the regular season, Greely allowed an average of 49.8 points per game. In the tournament, the Rangers have been incredibly stingy, allowing just 37 points per game.

“We’re unselfish and selfless. Our defense through the year has been OK. In the tournament, we’ve been able to ratchet it up,” Greely coach Travis Seaver said.

Seaver pointed to containing Violette, who averaged just under 20 points per game in the regular season and scored 21 in Messalonskee’s 61-40 win over Oceanside in the regional final, as important for the Rangers success.

“Violette’s the key. He makes them go. They’re playing with a lot of confidence. They’re playing with a lot of emotion, and they should be,” Seaver said.
