Forecaster: local hoops teams chase a Gold Ball-Southern edition

In Class A South, Cape Elizabeth earned the No. 3 seed after an 11-7 regular season which was capped by a 60-44 loss at defending state champion Falmouth and a 51-38 home victory over Fryeburg Academy. Andrew Hartel had 16 points in the loss. Against the Raiders, Marshall Peterson led the way with 20 points.

The Capers played the second half of the season without injured junior standout Finn Bowe, but managed to persevere.

PRELIM: Skowhegan beats Brewer in double-overtime thriller to advance

SKOWHEGAN - Several lead changes alongside a buzzer-beater at the end of the first overtime served as a microcosm for Thursday night's Class A North boys prelim between No. 9 Brewer and No. 8 Skowhegan. A game so good, it came down to a second overtime.

PRELIM: Cony muscles way into quarterfinals with win over Erskine
Rams' defense, shooting touch leads the way.

... Parlin finished with a game-high 17 points, but contributions came from several of his teammates as well.

Roddy finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Nate Parlin grabbed a team-high 12 boards and sophomore Bryan Stratton collected seven offensive rebounds. And everyone in Coach T.J. Maines’ platooned system contributed on defense and helped force 26 turnovers. Junior Noah Bonsant paced the Eagles with with 13 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots while sophomore Jack Jowett added 12 points.

“I’ve got six sophomores on the team and I thought overall they played OK with a big crowd and did some good things,” Erskine coach Tim Bonsant said. “It’s about making shots. We had a lot of good looks that didn’t go in. I counted eight missed layups.”

Greely rolls over Kennebunk in first playoff test

PORTLAND—As the top seed in a tournament, there’s nothing to be gained by stretching out the drama.

Greely’s boys’ basketball team made sure there was absolutely no drama Friday evening at the Portland Exposition Building when it met Kennebunk in a Class A South quarterfinal.

By the time the game was just over three minutes old, the top-ranked Rangers led the eighth-seeded Rams, 11-0.

Greely routs Kennebunk
The unbeaten Rangers start fast in a 76-31 Class A South quarterfinal victory.

... “Defense is a big part of our game,” said guard Jordan Bagshaw. “I think the biggest reason why we win games is our defense. We do drills in practice, about half the practice, working on defense. We execute on defense and do a great job every game.”

Greely (19-0) will play fourth-ranked York, which defeated Westbrook, in the semifinals, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cross Insurance Arena. The Rangers swept the Wildcats this season, 77-51 and 61-42.

Kennebunk (8-12) had lost to Greely 73-48 on Feb. 6.

Bagshaw and Matt McDevitt each scored 17 points for Greely. Ryan Twitchell added 13.

w/ post game video: York edges Westbrook
The Wildcats survive a tightly contested game and advance to the Class A South semifinals.

... “We knew he was going to get his 18 to 20 points,” Hogan said. “But if we limited him, we knew we would have a good shot to win.”

LaBonte, a 6-6 forward, was held to four points in the first half but drove to the basket more.

“We wanted to limit his touches,” LeGage said.

“He got loose in the second half and asserted himself a little bit more … and some of their other guys made some nice shots, too.”

PREVIEW: A North boys: Medomak, Hampden, Oceanside remain strong, but challengers abound

... Rival Oceanside, which fell to the Panthers twice during the regular season after defeating them in last year’s A North championship game, combines a mix of height and perimeter play for coach Matt Breen led by returning veterans Nate Raye, Sam Atwood and Michael Norton Jr.

Hampden is the youngest of the three favorites, with junior Ian McIntyre a third-year a starter at center but the rest of coach Russ Bartlett’s rotation of underclassmen set to see their first significant postseason action come tournament time.

Juniors Johnny Wolfington and Tommy Raye, sophomores Kory Winch and Ross Webb and freshman Bryce Lausier and Mikey Raye all have made successful transitions to major varsity minutes. But the Broncos’ postseason longevity may hinge on the ability of Lausier, the team’s top outside shooting threat, to come back from a broken wrist suffered in late January.

Worst refs I HAVE EVER SEEN at the Brunswick vs Cape game tonight.

Calling a shooting foul on a late shot after the game is over to decide a game in overtime during a tournament..... Terrible!

I don't know how the MPA does it! They get worse and worse every year!! This almost seems like a joke to me

I agree, the same ref that made that call made several others from a full court away when the other 2 refs had such a better and much closer view of what he was calling. It actually looked like he had a personal issue with Brunswick. He looked very unprofessional at the end to with his over dramatization of grabbing his arm sending a group of teenage boys home when the correct call was let the 2 teams decide the game in a 2nd overtime. He robbed the boys and the fans of a hard fought game by both teams.
