WHO IS THE BEST COMPETITOR?

Here is an exercise that will tell you a lot about your team. Give your kids a sheet of paper with everyone on your roster listed on it, and ask them one simple question – who can I count on every day to show up and compete the hardest? Have them rank the best competitors on their team, 1 through 15. Everyone has to get a number. There are no ties allowed. And they will include themselves in the rankings. Have them put they name on the top of their sheet.

We’ve used this exercise with our teams, including earlier this season. It’s amazing what you will learn about your team. First of all, you’ll get a great snapshot of who they really respect the most as great competitors. You’ll find out exactly who they think they can count on every day, and see if it aligns with what your staff thinks (have your staff fill out the same sheet).

It’s a great way to look in the mirror. Before we shared the information with our players, we asked them if they wanted us to and made sure they were all okay with it. After all, someone is going to finish 15th. And how your guys can handle this could have a negative effect. But I think most teams are going to want to know, as our guys did. If you value competing, this is a list you can post in the locker room so they can see it every day. This isn’t what your coaches said, this is what your teammates said. They think this about you.

That is a dangerous exercise that should be used with caution. It should be used with the right team, with the right make up of players, and for the right reasons. For some teams that don't need this exercise, it would only tear their team apart and ruin friendships. It is an interesting exercise, but needs to be used wisely.
