SJ: And One - Sharing the wealth

Sharing the wealth

The Edward Little boys’ team played well out of the gates, defeating Bangor at home, 58-42.

Jarod Norcross Plourde and Darby Shea paced the Red Eddies with 14 points apiece, and Wol Maiwen and Samatar Iman also hit double digits with 11 each.

"I think that what you saw was a pretty balanced effort," EL coach Mike Adams said. "We have maybe four guys that could go off and score 20 points on any given night. Or we could have four or five guys that could score 14, 15 points on any given night. And I think that makes us a little more difficult to prepare for, having more weapons."

Favorites and Contenders make Opening Weekend Statements

... While MDI and Orono are certainly the favorites in Class B, Hermon could be a team to watch as well. The Hawks went to Presque Isle on Saturday and pulled away for a 64-48 win. Making his varsity basketball debut for Hermon on Saturday was 6’3″ freshman Isaac Varney, who notched seventeen points in the winning effort. The class B race should be clearer this week as Hermon will host Orono on Wednesday night and MDI on Saturday.

Defending Class C champion George Stevens Academy opened defense of their gold ball by downing Deer Isle Stonington. The shocker from the weekend came from Guilford as Piscataquis knocked off Schenck 57-48. Piscataquis was bounced in the preliminary round a year ago and hasn’t been mentioned among teams to watch this year. Bryce Gilbert pumped in 33 points in the winning effort. Schenck, a semifinalist a year ago returns the bulk of their squad, including 6’3″ senior Justin Thompson. They will still be right in the mix come tourney time.

A shocker that Schenck was knocked off on opening night.
The Sun Journal/Central Maine Times does a nice job with their tidbits/notebook stuff.

Notes: Coach’s blog post enhances Nokomis’ attention to detail
Ryan Martin came across a blog last year written by University of Maine men’s basketball coach Bob Walsh about the different characteristics that separate a winning mentality from a losing one.

Will youth be served for Hermon boys?

... “I thought we let that little bit of pressure, which wasn’t hard pressure, get to us,” said Reed. “A little bit of our inexperience showed up but I thought we handled it well for it being this early in the season. We didn’t make every decision right but the kids fought through it and showed some togetherness.”

Trask led the way with 20 points, but the Hermon attack was balanced with Marseille (17 points), freshman swingman Isaac Varney (14), sophomore guard Cody Hawes (10) and junior forward Jordan Bishop (nine) all making major contributions.

“We’ve had pretty good balance all year so far and that’s a credit to the kids,” said Reed. “They’re skilled kids, they enjoy playing together, and I can really say that one through 12. They play unselfishly and they enjoy each other’s success.”
