Auburn-Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame: 4 LHS greats to be inducted

Johnson is one of four star athletes and coaches of the past, all with connections to Lewiston High School, who will be inducted this year into the Auburn-Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame. The class was announced Friday at Gipper’s Sports Grill.

Longtime LHS and Bates football coach Edwin “Skip” Capone, LHS and Bowdoin football lineman and kicker John Delahanty, and the late Ronald “Pep” Gagne, a 1950s basketball great, will be received at the 33rd annual ceremony at Ramada Inn on Sunday, April 24.

A-L Sports Hall of Fame: "Pep" Gagne was a "pro" at Lewiston

... It was on the hardwood that the 1957 LHS graduate found the most success. The two-time All-State selection scored more than 1,200 points in his Blue Devils career.

"Most of the time he was always the top scorer of his team. And a lot of times other teams would ... double- or triple-team him to try to stop, and even then he still was able to score," Norm Gagne said. "At one time he was one of the top 50 players in the country. Back then they kept track of that."

Gagne was also an All-State end on the Lewiston football team in the fall of 1956. He played on the Blue Devils' undefeated baseball team in the spring of 1957 as a catcher and infielder.

A-L Hall of Fame: Edward Little alumni highlight the 2017 class

...Lambert was a star on the court, for which he was named Sun Journal's Player of the Year, and on the diamond for Edward Little. After high school he continued to play both sports at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, where he was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame this past fall.

At Brandeis, he scored 1,500 points, and is sixth in the school's history in rebounds with 775. On the diamond, 12 of his 19 saves came in 2005, which led NCAA Division III that season. His 19 career saves is still the most in school history.

Lambert had professional opportunities in both sports. He passed on basketball tryout opportunities in Europe, and instead decided to sign with the Washington Nationals organization to continue his baseball career. He started with rookie ball and reached as high as Advanced Class-A from 2005-07.

Auburn-Lewiston Hall of Fame: Lambert values time playing sports in Auburn

...Lambert made the Edward Little varsity basketball team his freshman year, which Francoeur said was fairly uncommon in the 1990s. It was a down time for the Red Eddies, so Lambert received a lot of playing time on a team that finished 2-16.

The next season, they went 4-14. Lambert’s junior season, 1998-99, Edward Little started 5-4 before winning its final nine games to finish 14-4.

That was followed by the 18-0 senior season, during which Lambert averaged 21 points and 14 rebounds per game, and was one of the top players in the state.

“One of the things I don’t think he gets enough recognition for was how good of a basketball player he was his senior year,” Francoeur said.
