Lai, Pogue Lead 'Cats to Sunday Semifinal Rematch vs. Maine

PORTLAND, Maine – Senior guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) and senior center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the No. 5 seed University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 71-54 win over No. 4 Stony Brook in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament at the Cross Insurance Arena on Saturday afternoon.

UNH improved to 19-11 overall on the season and advances to the America East semifinals and a game against No. 1 seed Maine at the arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Lai scored 22 points, 10 of them in the third quarter, and played tough defense throughout the game. Pogue scored 14 points and had 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

The semifinal game is a rematch from last year. UNH was the No. 1 seed and beat Stony Brook in the quarterfinals last year in Portland as well and advanced to play Maine. The Black Bears won the semifinal, 61-52.

Maine swept the two-game regular season series against UNH this year.

NEXT UP

The Wildcats advance to the tournament semifinals for the second straight season and again match up against Maine. A berth in the tournament championship game is on the line. UNH has never played in the America East championship game.

UNH-Maine is the first of two semifinal pairings scheduled for Sunday at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. Tickets for the games are available at www.crossarenaportland.com.

No. 1 Maine advanced to Sunday with a 65-43 win over No. 8 UMBC in the first quarterfinal game Saturday.

The America East championship game will be played Friday, March 9 at the home of the top remaining seed in the tournament. The games in Portland are on ESPN3 and the title game will be on ESPNU.

Pogue, Fogarty Double-Doubles Not Enough as ‘Cats Fall to Maine in Semifinal

PORTLAND, Maine – Seniors Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Kat Fogarty (Westminster, Mass.) both finished in double figures in points and rebounds, but the no. 5 seed University of New Hampshire fell short in the America East semifinal, losing to the regular season champion, no. 1 seed Maine, by a score of 64-48.

Pogue finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds, giving her two double-doubles in as many games, while Fogarty finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double since the season-opening contest at Xavier.

The 'Cats were held to just 29% shooting from the floor, starting off slow shooting 8-35 in the first half, and couldn't catch up with the fast-paced Maine offense. Despite a 20-point lead for Maine in the fourth, the Wildcats still battled to the final whistle, going on a few runs and outscoring Maine in the final quarter.
