Nolan & Myers: A UNH to Nashville Connection
DURHAM, N.H. – They are products of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey program and now they are up close and enjoying a Stanley Cup-chasing ride with the up-and-coming Nashville Predators, a hot team that represents perhaps the hottest city in the country.

Tom Nolan – the answer to a UNH hockey trivia question and veteran of one of the school's best teams – is in his 10th year as a scout for the Predators and helped build the roster for the team that opened its first Stanley Cup final run Monday night with a 5-3 loss at the home of the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

Mat Meyers, who graduated from UNH four years ago this month and has a history of dealing with tough challenges, is helping to mold those Predators in his second year as a video coach with the team, expanding on the skills he developed as a video coordinator with the Wildcats.

Last week, the Peter Laviolette-coached Predators won their first Western Conference title when they finished off the Anaheim Ducks, 6-3, at home to win their series four games to two and advance to the music and hockey-loving city's first Cup finals. ... ction.aspx

Umile Announces Class of 2021
Class Includes Three Forwards, Three Defensemen, One Goaltender

DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire men's hockey head coach Dick Umile announced Friday that seven student-athletes will join the Wildcats as freshmen in the fall for the 2017-18 season.

The seven-man Class of 2021 consists of three defensemen, three forwards and one goaltender: Max Gildon (Plano, Texas), Charlie Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.), Benton Maass (Elk River, Minn.), Eric MacAdams (Salem, Mass.), James Miller (Spruce Grove, Alberta), Mike Robinson (Bedford, N.H.), and Kohei Sato (Nishitokyo, Japan).

"We are excited to welcome seven new student-athletes to UNH for the 2017-18 season," said Umile. "We have a good balance of strength, speed and competitiveness in this class and feel they can all make an immediate impact. Associate head coaches Mike Souza and Glenn Stewart did an outstanding job in recruiting this class."

Gildon, 18, is a 6-foot-3, 191-pound defenseman that the National Hockey League (NHL) Central Scouting Service has ranked 54th among draft-eligible North American players, which would make him a likely second- or third-round selection in this weekend's NHL Entry Draft (June 23-24). On Tuesday, Gildon was invited to play for the United States at the 2017 World Junior Summer Showcase, a week-long (July 29 – Aug. 5) event in Plymouth, Mich., that will include 12 international competitions between Canada, Finland, Sweden and the U.S. In April, Gildon played for the gold-medal winning U.S. National Under-18 squad at the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship in Slovakia. He was named to the tournament All-Star Team after scoring four goals and tallying two assists, including a hat trick in USA's win against the Czech Republic and a goal in a 4-3 semifinal victory over Sweden.

Kelleher, 20, a 5-foot-8, 185-pound forward, comes to UNH after spending last season between the Tri-City Storm and Sioux City Musketeers, both of the United States Hockey League (USHL). In 40 games with the Storm, he tallied 33 points with 11 goals and 22 assists while registering 18 points on six goals and 12 helpers in 21 games with the Musketeers. Kelleher played a key role in getting Sioux City to the USHL Championship series with 10 points on three goals and seven assists in 12 playoff games. In 2015-16, Kelleher saw action in 38 games for the Boston Junior Bruins of the U.S. Premier Hockey League (USPHL) and amassed 53 points on 17 goals and 36 assists. He is the younger brother of former UNH standout Tyler Kelleher '17, who finished his Wildcat career ranked 16th (167 points) on the University's all-time scoring list.

Maass, 18, is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound defenseman who competed for Elk River High School (Minn.) and the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) this past season. He is one of seven players from the NAHL to be ranked (No. 159 overall) by the NHL Central Scouting Service, making him a potential NHL Draft pick this weekend. After recording seven goals and nine assists with the Ice Dogs during the regular season, Maas recorded two goals and two assists in seven NAHL playoff games. At Elk River, Maass helped guide the Elks to a 21-4 record with 29 points on six goals and 23 assists in the regular season and four points from a pair of goals and a pair of assists in two playoff games. As a junior co-captain in 2016, he scored six goals and tallied 16 assists in 25 games.

MacAdams, 20, is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound forward who played 54 games in the USHL in 2016-17, 43 with the Sioux Falls Stampede and 11 with the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Most recently with the Fighting Saints, MacAdams tallied five points on a pair of goals and three assists, including a goal and an assist in the playoffs. While at Sioux Falls, he scored 11 goals and assisted on nine for 20 points. He also played for Sioux Falls in 2015-16, tallying 18 points on 10 goals and eight assists in 51 games. Prior to the USHL, MacAdams played at Austin Preparatory School in Reading, Mass. In 2014-15, he led the team in scoring with 42 points on 19 goals and 23 assists in just 24 games played.

Miller, 19, is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound defenseman who spent last season with the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). He played 37 games for Penticton and tallied 18 points on six goals and 12 assists, helping the team to a 41-13-1 record en route to the BCHL title. In the championship game, Miller dished out an assist on the game-winning goal in overtime. Miller spent two seasons with the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). In 2015-16, he played 50 games and tallied 21 points on five goals and 16 assists. The year before, he appeared in 40 games, lighting the lamp twice and dishing out nine helpers for 11 points.

Robinson, 20, is a 6-foot-4, 195-pound goaltender who was selected in the third round of the 2015 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks. The Granite State native most recently played with the Springfield Junior Blues of the NAHL, appearing in 25 games and tallying a record of 11-10-0 with a goals against average (GAA) of 2.99 and a save percentage of .916. In 2015-16, Robinson played for the Boston Junior Bruins (USPHL) where he tallied a record of 7-5-0, a GAA of 2.93 and a save percentage of .911.

Sato, 20, is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward who last season registered 36 points (14g, 22a) for the Northeast Generals of the NAHL. He previously appeared in seven games for the North Iowa Bulls of the North American Tier III Hockey League (NA3HL) and recorded 15 points on nine goals and six assists. In 2015-16, Sato helped lead the Bulls to a NA3HL Championship and was named to the Silver Cup All-Tournament Team. He also played for the Japanese Men's National Under-20 team in the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia (CCOA) in 2015. ... -2021.aspx
