Hockey East coaches sad to see Dick Umile go

...“Yeah, it’s bittersweet,” he said. “I’m looking forward to retirement but also this final season in Hockey East. There’s a lot of people that you’ve shared some great moments with here -- coaches, players.”

If it’s bittersweet for the coach, who will be succeeded by assistant coach and former player Mike Souza, it adds another layer of expectation for his team, which wants to send him out the right way after a series of mediocre seasons.

“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t add pressure,” said senior defenseman Dylan Chanter, “but it’s a good kind of pressure. Obviously, we’d do anything for coach. ... Going out with him, it’s an honor, and it wouldn’t feel right if we didn’t have a good year for him.”

UNH hockey: A lot resting on Tirone’s shoulders

...“He compares (goaltending) to golf for me,” said Tirone, who had never played the game before. “He says when you make a bad shot out there you don’t drop another ball and get another chance. You play the ball from there and have a short memory. Whether it’s a great shot or a bad shot, it matters how I hit the next one.”

Buckley also tutors Penguins goalie Matt Murray.

″(Buckley) taught me lessons on the golf course that he wants to me to carry over,” Tirone said. “It’s the same type of stuff he does with Matt Murray. They’ve had a lot of success together so I buy into what he tells me. Having a short memory helps me with my consistency.

“I started (golf) this summer,” he added. “Mike Buckley wanted to get me out there and he said this is going to make me a better goalie. He’s kind of the guru so what he says, I do.”

Tirone, Defense Lead 'Cats to a Sweet Sweep

DURHAM – Now that's the way to start a season.

The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team got itself a bit of revenge and the start to the 2017-18 season it was looking for this weekend: The Wildcats, with a renewed focus on defense, completed a series sweep of No. 5 UMass Lowell on Saturday night with a 3-1 triumph at the Whittemore Center.

The win followed up a 4-3 victory on Friday night at the Tsongas Arena and left UNH undefeated through the first two games of the season for the first time since 2012.

"It's obviously a great weekend," said UNH coach Dick Umile, who opened his 28th and final season in grand fashion. "The guys played hard all weekend. Danny Tirone stood tall tonight when we needed him to make a big save. Obviously winning two games against UMass Lowell is a huge weekend for us.
