Wildcats brace for top-ranked Dukes

...“The encouraging thing is that we’re getting to third down,” said coach Sean McDonnell. “That’s what we’ve got to do this week (against James Madison). We’ve got to get to third down situations and we’ve got to win ’em.”

On Towson’s fourth possession of the first quarter they drove to the UNH 17 where they had a third-and-7, but Holt sacked Stover for a 6-yard loss and Towson had to settle for a 40-yard field goal.

The UNH defense — which forced five three-and-outs in the first half — had set the tone, and when the offense scored twice in the first 5:06 of the second quarter the Wildcats were well on their way to a 40-17 win.

“That’s definitely a huge plus for a defense to be able to go three-and-out and get the ball back to our offense just like that,” said defensive end Kyle Reisert. “We’re looking to continue that streak of third-down stops to get our offense back on the field.”

No. 16 'Cats Defeated 21-0 by No. 1 James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Evan Horn (Lebanon, Pa.) recorded an interception in the end zone and notched career bests with eight tackles and a 17-yard punt return, but the 16th-ranked University of New Hampshire football team was shut out, 21-0, by top-ranked and defending national champion James Madison before a JMU Homecoming crowd of 25,298 on Saturday at Bridgeforth Stadium.

GAME NOTES
•Robinson's third-quarter Pick-6 was the first against the Wildcats since Towson's Tye Smith returned an INT 45 yards for a TD at Unitas Stadium on Nov. 12, 2011.
•Horn's 17-yard punt return in the third quarter was a career long and set up the Wildcats with their best starting field position of the game (JMU 48).
•O'Connor completed a 26-yard pass to Malik Love (Alcoa, Tenn.) in the third quarter that allowed UNH to enter the Dukes' red zone (17-yard line) for the first time. It also improved O'Connor's season passing numbers to 3-for-3 for 95 yards and a TD.
•The 'Cats came up empty when a 42-yard field goal try from Max Pedinoff (Newtown, Pa.) was wide right.
•It was the first time all season Knight failed to throw a TD pass and the first time since UNH's NCAA second-round playoff loss at James Madison on Dec. 3, 2016.
•The Wildcats were shut out for the first time since Sept. 3, 2016, at San Diego State. It was the first shutout defeat against FCS competition since a 17-0 setback at William & Mary on Nov. 2, 2013.
