Wildcats hoping for happy homecoming

...“Bounce back,” was senior co-captain Donald Goodrich’s succinct message to the team. “The next one is more important than the last one.”

UNH (2-1, 1-0 CAA), which tumbled from No. 9/11 to No. 15/16 in the latest FCS national rankings, will face an improved Rhode Island squad for homecoming Saturday afternoon (3:30, ESPN3) at Wildcat Stadium.

The Rams (1-2, 0-1 CAA) are coming off a 17-10 win over Ivy League power Harvard and came close to knocking off Central Michigan of the FBS in their opener before falling in triple overtime, 30-27.

“This is definitely a very good Rhode Island team,” Goodrich said. “It’s a CAA game so we always have to kind of have the hair on the back of neck stand up a little bit more and get ready and play downhill on them.”

WILDCATS 28, RAMS 14: Knight has himself a day for ’Cats

...Knight completed 23 of 34 passes for a career-high 420 yards and three touchdowns. O’Connor caught 11 passes for a career-high 232 yards and one score.

On defense, Isiah Perkins came up with two interceptions when the Rams were trying to rally.

“Especially coming off last week we just wanted to finish,” Perkins said. “We got a great pass rush and I was able to make plays.”

Knight passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the Wildcats led 15-0 at halftime. He hit Rory Donovan for a 17-yard TD with 6:07 left in the first quarter for the game’s first score.

Doug Poole‏ @DougPoole_UNH

According to my research, Neil O'Connor 232 rec yds vs. URI is most by a @UNH_Football player since Oct. 2, 2004 (David Ball- 284).

Knight giving UNH football a boost at QB

...With that in mind, Knight trained in San Diego for a month during the summer with teammates Donald Goodrich and Kieran Presley.

“A lot of my problem last year was I was just always hurt,” Knight said. “Something little was always wrong. I’ve been working a lot on diet ... to stay healthy and feel good during games.”

He turned in a career performance last week with 420 yards passing and three touchdowns in a 28-14 win over Rhode Island.

“I’m staying in the pocket longer and learning when I’ve got to throw the ball away,” Knight said. “I’ve done a better job not taking as many sacks and to get rid of the ball when I need to.”

He’s completed almost 62 percent of his passes this season with 10 TDs and just two interceptions.
