…...we want him to play 4 or fewer to redshirt right?

This would be the last game he can play in if that is the plan.

Unfortunately any delay in Ferguson returning or a re-inury all but guarantees that reality.

From there, things get interesting:

1) We would then have a legitimate QB competition on our hands, depending on how Fagnano and the offense roll from here on out. Let's assume, for the sake of the argument, that the team finishes 4-1 with a win over UNH and Fagnano ends up having something like 15 total touchdowns and only 5 turnovers and the team averages over 30 a game. Who wins the competition next fall?

2) If Fagnano loses the competition to Ferguson, can Fagnano stomach sitting a year (next year) as a red-shirt after he's already started a bunch of games and succeeded or will he bounce? It wouldn't make a ton of sense for him to leave since he would have to sit the year anyway, but sometimes stuff gets weird.

Well it will be another start for Fagnano at Homecoming. Looking forward to see him in action for a whole game. Would be nice if the defense show up Saturday.

I would not let him play more than 4. Not worth it. Start someone else. Then, even if Fergie plays next year, Fagnano has three years of starting. Please do this Maine.

This is a great point and an unprecedented situation for Maine. I'm slightly concerned about Ferguson's ability to stay healthy, though.

Disagree with this strategy now that Fergie is out for the year. Play the best player, if Ferg was coming back in week 9 maybe you take this strategy. But this is a team sport Fagnano is your best QB, play him the balance of the year and let these two fight it out for starting QB next year. It would be unfair to the rest of the team to play an inferior player just to save Fagnano another year of playing time. That's my take. ;)

Fair point FAFAN,

I will disagree though with one caveat....if Fagnano comes out this week and hammers it and we look like world-beaters.... maybe we make a run for the playoffs. Certainly if we lose Fagnano should redshirt....play one of the other guys...better for the long-term prospects of the program.

Fergie could get Carney Lansforded here.
