UMBC men make a comeback to edge UMaine men 67-66!!!!

Postby bcbc55 » Sun Feb 10, 2019 4:08 pm

In a must home game win for Maine to go 8-8 may have doomed that possibility unless Maine can beat Stonybrook or Hartford on the road as they gave up a 5 point second half lead and came back from 67-61 with 1:31 to go in the game after having a 5 point lead as Ashley hit a 3 pointer from the left corner off his blocked shot with 13 seconds to go and Maine stole the inbounds and Eze hit a layup to make it 67-66 with 2 seconds to go as Maine scored 5 points in 11 seconds, only to have Maine not be able to foul and UMBC escapes with a 67-66 nail biter win.

Maine lead throughout most of the first half and UMBC came back to tie it at 32 all.

UMBC struggled all game from behind the arc 6 for 29 until they hit 3 consecutive 3's late in the game to take a 6 point lead.

Both teams only played 7 men.

UMBC scored 17 points of Maine's 15 turnovers and Maine scored 10 points of UMBC's 13 TO's.

This is a game Maine maybe shoulda, coulda won as they lead throughout most of the game.

Maine falls to 3-7 in conference play and 5-20 overall while UMBC moves to 7-3 in the conference and 15-10 overall.

Jackson with 22 and Sherburne with 21 lead the winners, while White with 17, Fleming with 15, Darwich had 11 and Eze had 10 for Maine.

Maine travels to Hartford on Wednesday for a 7:00pm game.

So with TeamRankings.com giving Maine a 59% chance of losing today and realtimerpi.com giving Maine a 59% chance of winning today, TeamRanking.com wins the correct prediction results between the two ranking predictions.

I can think of 4 or 5 missed free throws in the last 10 minutes. Make 2 of those and they win by 1...

"BZ": Agree and Maine is only shooting 65% for the line this year so far.

Maine needed to be a lot more patient in the 2nd half when they had the 5 point lead.. 7 minutes or so left? UMBC missing shots.. would love to see them be way more patient and work for better shots while running the clock down. I think that was the big dagger today. Gave UMBC way too many new opportunities , which eventually they took advantage of by nailing the 3 pointers ( 3 of them in a row) to put it away. This is one to definitely learn from without a doubt. Maine once again played nose to nose with a chance to win against a top 3 team in the league. On to the next one. Had to be the largest crowd of the year for a Men's game as well. Looked pretty impressive as these games go.

Tough loss but good crowd and Maine has improved quite a lot. Seems at times like Maine shoots itself in the foot. They could have won this game. Barron sounded a bit frustrated about all the mental lapses as he calls it. But they are lightyears ahead of where they were last year. Have to be somewhat patient. They are going to make some noise in America East before this season is over with.

"basketball-guy": You are right, they have improved but still do not make good basketball decisions with the lead as shown by the games they lost with having half-time leads and today's game up 5 under 3 minutes.

The 7 players that played today are not "rookie" basketball players, 4 juniors started and 1 soph and a junior and 1 soph subs are not true juniors or sophomores except for Fleming a true junior. The others did not come right out of high school to play for Maine except Fleming and Moss who did not play today are the only true class players on the roster.

Maine has played 23 games before going into the second half of their AE conference schedule. (15 non-conference and 8 conference).

Look at their losses in conference play. Only games that they didn't have a chance to win was against Vermont at home 73-49 and at Vermont 86-63.

Losses to UMBC 61-52 and 67-66, were winnable as Maine was up at the half by 12 vs. UMBC on the road. 64-61 home loss to Hartford up 9 33-24 at the half, 77-76 home loss to Stonybrook and Maine lead 16 at the half 33-17 and the road loss to Binghamtom 78-66 down 2 at the half 38-36.

Just not been able to hold onto leads in those tough losses. With the age of the players it cannot be blamed on being young in experienced players by now after playing as many games as they have played so far this season and being older players.

Yagodin's injury has hurt Were Into, Begic and Iluyomade red shirted and if so why? Prijovic has to sit out because of the transfer rule.

Maine only loses two seniors Araujo and Ilija S. and they didn't play today. Maine will have a veteran team returning ( 17 players 24 returning and 3 new recruits if no one transfers) and with the 3 new recruits should be ready to make a serious run at the top half of the conference based on what Maine has done so far in conference play this year.

The conference results so far has to be a little disappointing to the coaching staff, players themselves and their loyal fans.

However, like basketball_guy stated in his post above they could surprise someone before the season is over. I agree. How finishing 7-9 with losses to Stonybrook and Hartford on the road and wins at home over UML, Bing, and ALbany and UNH on the road.

To finish off the season how about a tourney upset quarter-final on the road?

"thebam": Couldn't agree more on your entire post. Maine played like they did in their losses to Hartford, Stonybrook, UMBC twice and Binghamtom. Not any where near enough patience on offense. Shot selection based on time and score in those tough losses with 9, 12 and 16 point leads at the half time in 3 of the 5 losses, down 2 at the half and one tied at half time.

Maine needs to find more shot selection patience especially with the lead knowing time and score As the old saying goes "time and patience and neither come in a bottle" or the one that says. "Patience is a virtue possess it if you can, it is found seldom in Women and never in Men".

I don't know that I'd blame Maine for poor shot selection, as that would insinuate they were taking bad shots in lieu of good ones they're passing up.

To my untrained eye, they aren't generating a ton of clean looks to begin with, so they end up taking poor shots as those are the only ones available, many at the end of the shot clock.

Now, they defend so well that grit and grinding their way to close games is working, but let's not pretend like they're some hyper-efficient offensive machine that is being held back by poor shot selection.

"UMaineSuperfan": Agree, My untrained eye, tells me that they take a lot of rushed shots with the shot clock running down as you stated, especially when they have leads. Don't protect leads well with their shooting abilities. They seem to play and shoot like that they are behind. Look at their overall shooting stats and they are only shooting 43.3% from the floor, 30.7% for 3's and 65.7% from the line.

With time and leading in score what is a good shot for one player may not be a good shot for another player.

Running the type of offense that Maine runs and most college teams does not dictate this. A continuity offense with the lead would and could determine who shoots, when they shoot and where they shoot from. Also, when trying to run some clock you do not see many college teams get the ball into the hands of the team's best dribble penetrator when there is 8 seconds to go on the shot clock and have him/her try to take it to the basket looking for a hoop, foul if there is no help defense or kick out pass for the three if a defender tries to help out on defense.

Bottom line: Great effort vs. UMBC.
But, good teams finish out games like this.
Maine isn't there yet. But, it's getting close.
Certainly should increase confidence in Barron's sideline work, and create some optimism for the future beyond this season.
