Has their SOS helped UMaine men in conference play?

Now that the UMaine men's basketball team has completed the first half of it's America East's basketball schedule with a 3-5 mark and a non-conference record of 2 and 13 for 5-18 overall it is time to look at whether the tough non-conference schedule has helped them in conference play.

Seeing that Maine had a very tough non-conference schedule based on realtimerspi.com's SOS (Strength of Schedule) rankings the SOS stats should reveal if that tough non-conference schedule has paid off so far in conference play.

The tougher the schedule, the more it gives coaches and players to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Maine has traveled a lot of miles in their non conference schedule all over the country.

Maine currently has the third toughest schedule (SOS) in the America East Conference with an SOS of 192. Only first pace Vermont's 131 and Hartford at 191 are higher.

Maine's 3 conference wins are over Albany (SOS 290), UMass-Lowell (SOS 259) and UNH (SOS 298) as they have a better SOS then the teams that they have beaten.
Maine's 5 conference losses were to Vermont (SOS 131), Hartford (SOS 191), Stonybrook (SOS 233), Binghamton (SOS 272) and UMBC (SOS 308). 2 of the losses were to teams currently ranked higher then Maine and 3 losses were to teams currently ranked lower then Maine in SOS.

Right now Maine is in 6th place in the conference and ranked 306 in Realtimerpi.com's RPI Rankings.

The America East Men's Conference is ranked 24 both in RPI and SOS of the 32 conferences.

I would say that the SOS has helped Maine in the first half of the schedule and hopefully will help them more further down the road of the second half of the conference schedule.

Remember SOS changes as teams go through their schedule in who Maine beats and who the teams that Maine has beaten has also beat. At one point Maine had the toughest SOS in the America East Conference, but has now dropped to third.
