UMaine Football Recruiting 2019

Postby UMaineSuperfan » Wed Dec 12, 2018 1:55 am

Recruiting season will heat up quite a bit as soon as this playoff run ends, hopefully a few weeks from now.

I thought it might be a good idea to take a look at the last 5 recruiting classes and do a little breakdown of the success rate; how many players ended up playing meaningful minutes, even if they never finished their careers (I'm going to call this a hit rate, a measure of how often we got scholarship level players), how many players made all conference teams, how many were on the team but were not impact players, and how many never made it to the field at all before leaving.

2014 Recruiting Class (Current 5th-year seniors or last year's graduates, depending on if they took a RS year)
Link: https://www.pressherald.com/2014/02/06/ ... ss_of_16_/
Total Recruits: 16
Offensive Recruit #: 7
Hits: Jamil Demby, Drew Belcher, Micah Wright, Darian Davis-Ray, Cody Levy
Hit Rate: 5/7
All-Conference Players: Demby, Wright, Levy
Non-Impact Players: 0
Departures: 2
Defensive Recruit #: 9
Hits: AJ Dawson, Sinmi Demuren, Jeff DeVaughn, Uchenna Egwuonwu, Darrius Hart, Mozai Nelson, Andrew Stevens, Connor Walsh
Hit Rate: 8/9
All-Conference Players: Nelson (as a special teamer)
Non-Impact Players: 0
Departures: 1
Overall Hit Rate: 13/16
Overall Non-Impact Players: 0
Overall Departures: 3/16, including both players from Maine.
Overall Analysis: a whale of a recruiting class in his penultimate season for Cosgrove. Tons of competent to above average players in this class.

2015 Recruiting Class (Current 4th-year seniors or RS Juniors, depending on if they took a RS year)
Link: https://goblackbears.com/news/2015/2/3/ ... h=football
Total Recruits: 22
Offensive Recruit #: 10
Hits: Jaquan Blair, Joe Fitzpatrick, Julian Dunn
Hit Rate: 3/10
All-Conference Players: Blair?
Non-Impact Players: 1
Departures: 6
Defensive Recruit #: 12
Hits: Josh Huffman, Taji Lowe, Charles Mitchell, Sterling Sheffield, Kayon Whitaker, Kayshawn Wilson
Hit Rate: 6/12
All-Conference Players: Sheffield, Whitaker
Non-Impact Players: 0
Departures: 6
Overall Hit Rate: 9/22
Overall Non-Impact Players: 1/22
Overall Departures: 12/22
Overall Analysis: saved by the high end defensive recruits, this was a bit of a feast or famine recruiting class, BUT it brought in three absolute studs on defense up front and at LB. Cosgrove’s swan song gave us Sheffield, and for that he should be commended.

2016 Recruiting Class (Current Juniors or RS Sophomores, depending on if they took a RS year)
Link: https://goblackbears.com/news/2016/2/2/ ... h=football
Total Recruits: 15
Offensive Recruit #: 6
Hits: Earnest Edwards, Josh Mack, Chris Ferguson
Hit Rate: 3/5
All-Conference Players: Edwards, Mack, Ferguson
Non-Impact Players: 1
Departures: 2 + Mack
Defensive Recruit #: 9
Hits: Skylar Bowman, Owen Elliot (special teams only), Jaron Grayer, Alejandro Oregon, Manny Patterson, DeAndre Scott (transfer), Deshawn Stevens
Hit Rate: 7/9
All-Conference Players: Patterson, Stevens
Non-Impact Players: 0
Departures: 2
Overall Hit Rate: 10/15
Overall Non-Impact Players: 1
Overall Departures: 4 + Mack
Overall Analysis: A bunch of high end players on both sides of the ball including an All-american and a number of all conference players. A really solid first class for Harasymiak.

2017 Recruiting Class (Current Sophomores or RS Freshmen, depending on if they took a RS year, plus transfers)
Link: https://goblackbears.com/news/2017/2/1/ ... h=football
Total Recruits: 18
Offensive Recruit # 12 + 1 Specialist
Hits: Liam Dobson, Ramon Jefferson, Grant McDonald (special teams only), Devin Young + The Doaker
Hit Rate: 4/10 + 1/1 Specialists
All-Conference Players: Dobson, Jefferson likely in the future
Non-Impact Players: 5 (including Robinson)
Departures: 2 + McDonald
Defensive Recruit #: 5
Hits: Jamehl Wiley, Eric Robertson, Shaq St. Lot
Hit Rate: 3/5
All-Conference Players: None
Non-Impact Players: 1
Departures: 1
Overall Hit Rate: 7/15 + 1 Specialst
Overall Non-Impact Players: 7
Overall Departures: 3
Overall Analysis: A few high profile players like Dobson, Jefferson and The Doaker, but a bit of a mixed bag otherwise. Lots of young guys ready to take over for older players (Wiley, Robertson, Young), and lots of guys who may or may not pan out (Robinson, Shears, Salamone, etc.) I’d consider this a down year overall, especially considering we got nothing out of all three transfers that year and lost one of the better recruits in McDonald, who was an athletic freak.

2018 Recruiting Class (Current True Freshmen or currently being RedShirted, plus transfers)
Link: https://goblackbears.com/news/2018/2/7/ ... h=football
Total Recruits: 24
Hits: Gerace,
Played: Gelb, Heyward, Sanders
Non-Impact Transfers: Royal
Departures: 2
The rest are taking a RS year
Analysis: Gerace is a stud's stud. Gelb looks like he can contribute long term. Heywarad looked the part his one game of play. Sanders looked competent as well in his few snaps. The rest is really unknown.

Some Rotation Players I couldn’t find on the official releases around NSD:
Offense: Gunnar Docos, Chris Mulvey, Andre Miller
Defense: None

Total Analysis: Maine’s recruiting over the last 5 years shows that we have succeeded at getting a slight majority of our recruits to play meaningful minutes most years, with a consistent 2-4 all conference level players. After that, the biggest cohort is players that leave for one reason or another. Typically, these players don’t make an impact before they leave, but the loss of a player like Josh Mack or Grant McDonald, who have shown they have top notch ability stings. Maine has a small number, typically 2-3 per year, who are on the team but never make significant contributions to the team.

Who will be the 2-4 players we bring in this year that end up being studs? Who leaves and why? Who fills out the roster? Should be fun to watch and see over the next few years as things unfold.

Terrific analysis! :)

Recruiting will be interesting this year. The playoff run has hurt in some ways (no time for coaches to visit in person and no time to host visits)....but will no doubt help in the long run as UM coaches can tout a deep playoff run and continued NFL viability.

Tons of offers are out there but no sign of a commitment yet.

There is at least one player visiting campus this week: https://twitter.com/therealcb9/status/1 ... 2273369088

I also appreciate the analysis. All in all, a good run for Maine. Maybe our remote location isn't so bad after all. I would think this playoff run is a net positive for the recruiting effort. A couple of NFL draft picks wouldn't hurt either. Looking forward to next weekend, Jan 5, and the years ahead.

Yes....."remote location". Anyone have a map of the Final 4 teams left in the playoffs? Fargo, ND....Brookings, SD.....Cheney, WA.....Orono, ME.

I think that it is safe to say that FCS success does not enirely depend on "location". :?

I was being snarky. I have been pretty clear on here that Orono, Maine is just fine. A little tougher perhaps but nothing good culture, coaching, facilities and winning can't overcome.

Timing!

Jeff, you're pretty good at finding offers via twitter. Seems like we should get a post going that keeps track of the offers/hudl tape, etc.

Official Offers/Commits Post; I'll edit it as the season develops.

Note: it's sometimes really hard to find these student-athletes again on twitter due to the search algorithm on twitter prioritizing certain posts over others, so I've posted their twitter handles here to make it easier to keep tabs on other offers these players may receive, official visit potential, etc. Obviously nobody should use this information to harass or otherwise bother these guys.

Note #2: I didn't list the offer dates, but some of these offers are from this summer so they may no longer be actual targets or still have an offer from Maine.

Note #3: I'll try to keep track of which guys are confirmed as having visited UMaine and the date of that visit if it's made available. Again, don't be weird about having this information aggregated

@UMaineSuperfan What a write up! That was awesome reading. Appreciate all the efforts.

After reading that I recognize just how miserably I've failed as a poster to this board.

Bravo SuperFan!

Great work UMSF, it will be interesting to see if this year's run translates to an increase in the talent level of our recruits. As you know we always seem to get guys that other schools didn't want maybe that trend will stop this year.
Loved the PPH article, pretty sure the recruits understand that the team can't meet with you this weekend we are busy playing in the Final 4

BearDown,

Recruiting has always been the subject that most interests me, so I wouldn't say you've failed miserably, you just have better things to do with your time, likely.

I keep most of that information filed away privately so it's really not that hard for me to put it on here.

I think it's good to keep a historical perspective and to see how we got here, especially since we've got such a dynamite squad this year. If you look back...we had three smash classes in a row that make up the bulk of our impact players. Sprinkle in a couple guys from the next class like Dobson and Jefferson, a couple guys who were signed mid-year or otherwise like Mulvey or Miller and a couple underclassmen like Young and Gerace and there you have it.

It also helps you see how the classes will age out; VerbalCommits is a great resource for this on the basketball side. For example: Maine's next two classes better be awesome because we're replacing three big years going forward and need to restock the cupboard.

I'm glad you enjoyed reading. If you're into twitter, feel free to chip in on the research side and post!
