Maine men get first win of season beat Fordham in double OT

Maine men did what they had to do tonight as they were predicted to have the best chance for their first win of the season playing Fordham at home and with a 37% predicted chance to win.

After falling behind early 6-0 and 20-12 Maine came back and trailed by just 1 at the half 24-23.

They did what they needed to do by keeping the score in the 50's for regulation time. Maine lead 46-39 with 7:27 to go in the 2nd half and Fordham rallied to tie the game up 55-55. Game was still tied 63-63 and forced a 2nd overtime where Maine took advantage of poor Fordham foul shooting to take away their first win of the season 75-68 and give Coach Richard Barron his first college men's win.

Andrew Fleming carried the Bears in the first half scoring 18 of Maine's 23 points on 3-3 for 3's, 4 2 pointers and a foul shot.

Maine also improved their 3 point shot selection shooting 8 for 18 for 44.4% after coming into the game shooting just 26.6% for 3's by going inside and the post players on the block would kick it out for open threes when doubled down on and when they didn't double down then Maine scored against the l on 1 defense, especially Fleming.

Maine by going inside more got to the foul line twice as much as they had been averaging coming into the game only just 10.7 foul shot attempts a game for 8 games and tonight they took 27 attempts (17 more than ave. per game) making 21 to shoot 77.8% after only shooting 57% from the line prior to tonight's game.

Fleming finished with 29 points, 12 rebounds a double double, 4 for 5 for 3's and 3 for 6 from the charity stripe.
White was the only other Maine player in double figures with 10 points.

For Fordham who goes to 5-2. Honor had 16, Cobb 18, and Bunting a dozen.

Game stats..FGA..FGM..FG%...3A..3M..3%.....FSA..FSM..FS%.....% of FGA as 3's..Reb..Asst..TO..PF

Scores by Halfs & 2 OT's
Maine.....23 55 63 75
Fordham.24 55 63 68

1. Going inside and doubling the foul shot attempts and improved their foul shooting 77.9% compared to just 57% coming in and took 27 foul shots compared to 10.7 ave coming in. Shot 17 more foul shots then average
2. scoring more in the paint out scoring Fordham 28-18 in the paint lane
3. Cutting back on 3 attempts only took 34.5% of 3 attempts compared to 39.9% coming into game tonight
4. Kept the game in the 50's in regulation time, excellent slow controlled game pace really bothered Fordham
5. Out rebounded Fordham 33 to 31
6. Had 16 assists of 23 hoops
7. Maine's man to man defense was much improved tonight
8. Scored 28 paint points and 21 points from line total of 49 of 75 points and scored 24 points from beyond the
arc and only took 18 3 attempts of their 43 FGA points

Only a few negatives:
1. Got tired from total minutes played by starters considering their was 50 minutes of action compared to the normal 40 minutes, Fleming played all 50 minutes, Araujo 42, Eze 37, White 34, Darwich 29, Larsson 28, Ilija S. 24, and Moss 6.
2. 23 turnovers and especially late in regulation and the first overtime, but recovered in the second OT
3. 2-3 matchup zone gave up to many open look 3's early which got Fordham the lead with open 3's

This would have been a tough loss if they hadn't prevailed in the second OT as Maine had lost 2 tough games on the road in overtime prior to tonight's home game OT win against an Atlantic 10 team who was 5-1 coming into the game tonight.

Fordham no bigger than Maine nor not any bigger than 3 of the 8 America East Opponents Maine will play in Conference action starting in January. Maine will compete with the bottom 3rd of the conference and should get a tournament spot if they play in those needed conference games like they did tonight.

Big overall improvement in their previous 8 games weakness.
