UMaine women WIN @ High ranked NC in #1 Conference

Postby bcbc55 » Fri Nov 30, 2018 9:15 pm

The 4-2 UMaine women's basketball team journies in to real tough basketball territory on Sunday to take on realtimerpi.com's number 17th of 351 D-1 schools RPI ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 5-3 who has a 25th SOS (Strength of Schedule) who plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference which currently is the number 1 conference of 32 conferences in the country of the 32 conferences which has a number 1 SOS ranking also.

Meanwhile Maine'[s RPI is 118 and SOS of 150and their America East Conference RPI is 26 and SOS of 22.

Maine's biggest problem besides facing the highly ranked North Carolina team is will they have their 6-1 post player Wadling and 5'11" Carroll back from injuries.

Maine has been in a real shooting slump as they are only shooting 41% from the floor, 28.5% from beyond the arc and only 65% from the line and are taking 46.7% of their FGA's as 3's. Therefore they will have to rely on their 2-3 match up zone and their man-to-0man defense that has held their 6 opponents to just 58 points a game so far, especially if they do not improve their current shooting percentages.

Great road win vs an ACC team!! 85-73 with 5 players in double figures!!! This team plays the best TEAM basketball that I've seen in a long time...men or women!! Fogarty with 4 3's in the first half! Maeve Carroll 11 rebounds and 8 points! Saar, Milan, Sutton and Rossignol all in double figures!!! TEAM over stars any day!!!! This team believes they can beat anybody!!

Guys: Sorry I didn't post a write up of the Maine-NC women's game yet like I usually do, but I was working on my "Off the Rim" basketball column for the Bangor Daily News that is due tonight. Will be in Tuesday's BDN. It is about that the Maine Basketball teams seem to be "relying on living or dying by the 3".

Today the women certainly lived by the 3 shooting 48.5% on 16 of 33 3 point attempts. They took 33 of their 61 FGA's as trees or 54.0%.

Played without a post player as Wadling still out with the concussion. Barra played a few minutes on the post it Maine played 5 guards most of the time. Maine got great 3 looks without dribble penetration or going inside outside. North Carolina who was much bigger didn't close out the Maine 3 point shooters well at all. Also they didn't take enough advantage when Maine went man from their 2-3 match up zone. Never posted Saar, Rossignol, Sutton, , Carrol, Fogarty or Millan.

Big win for Maine. Should move them up the RPI standings with a win over an ACC Team which ACCConference was ranked number one in RPI and SOS in the 32 conference rankings. North Carolina was ranked 17th in RPI of the 351 D-1 WOMEN'S TEAMS.

Maine has not lost yet because of the injuries and only playing 6 players many minutes.
Carroll or Fogarty up on the block much at all.

Coach Vachon really out coached the NC coach through out the entire 40 minutes.

Score by quarters:

Maine...........18...44...62...85
North Carolina.18...32..45...73

Game stats.....FGA...FGM...FG%...3A...3M...3%.....FSA...FSM...FS%...Reb...Asst. PF...TO...$ofFGA's as 3's
Maine............61......30...49.2%..33...16...48.5%...12.....9....75%....29.....24...16...11......54.0%
North Carolina.61.......25..40.9%..33...9....27.4%...18....14....77.8%.40.....14...13...12......48.5%

Maine double figure scorers..Millan 21, Sutton 17, Saar 15, Rossignol 14 and Fogarty 12.
North Carolina double figure scorers...Barby 21, Watts 16, and Kea 10.

Maine 3 point shooting: Millan 3-9, Sutton 3-5, Saar 3-8, Rossignol 4-8 and Fogarty 4-6. Outstanding 3 point shooting throughout the game.

Interesting enough both Maine and NC attempted 61 FG's and both attempted 33 3 point attempts.

NC really did not take advantage of their size either offensively or defensively.

"MaineSuperFan": I agree. Beating the 17th ranked team in RPI in the country of 351 teams who play in the number 1 Atlantic Coast Conference with a number 1 in RPI and number 1 SOS of the 32 D-1 conferences.

Maybe many are following the super UMaine Football teams win last Saturday and looking forward to their quarter-final playoff game at Weber State this coming Friday.

Being a basketball person, I guess I can understand the football people not commenting on this big win for the Maine women. Maybe they just haven;t caught up on the women's win yet enough to post about it.

I know, right? This was a dominant performance on the road against a team that received 5 votes in last week's AP top 25 poll...and, as you mention, without the services of Fanny Wadling!

Semi-random question: if Maine wins the rest of its non-conference games (a very tall task with NC State thrown in the mix), goes unbeaten in the conference regular season (another difficult task), and loses in the conference title game, does it get an at-large bid?

I know this sequence of events is very unlikely, just wanted to gauge how close (or far) Maine is to/from at-large consideration with this little thought experiment.
