Thanks for the info. Keep us updated. Watching JJB take over the Dallas/Houston game wright now. Looks like Berea from old times.

Miller escapes a bases loaded jam and the score remains 0-0 after 1 inning of play.

Observations from Vegas !

UMaine clearly looked like a team that was playing on an outdoor baseball diamond for the first time in 4+ months, but still managed to hang in there and make it a close ball game.

Pitching - Miller did not have his best control and got no calls on the corners (not blaming the ump, he was pretty consistent) and had to pitch from down in the count to virtually every UNLV batter, which ran his pitch count up quicly (following 31 in the first inning !). He did however hang tough and repeatedly come back strong in 3-0 and 2-0 counts, and with runners on-base. His off-speed stuff was absolutely key and he spotted it well, although working the inside more with it probably would have helped. Gave up only 2 earned runs over 6 innings, and could just as easily have kept it to one or none. AJ Balsinde came in and threw respectable, but was somewhat hot and cold with his control as well. He'd throw consistent strikes to two batters and then just as likely walk the next on four straight. Got out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th, and should have gotten out of the 7th but for a two-out throwing error. The one run to cross the plate in his 2 IP was unearned.

Offense - took a while to get on track and the guys definitely looked "stiff" facing the first live pitching that wasn't their own. Playing the first game under the lights certainly doesn't help. All in all, Tager (even though 0/3), McAvoy and Mercurio looked most comfortable swinging the bat, and Menendez had a clutch line drive single with runners on 2nd and 3rd to tie the game at 2-2 ! Of Note, Kyle Stilphen, as DH, collected his First College Baseball Base Hit !, a solid single !!!

Baserunning - I only single out this aspect, because it is worth noting that UMaine made at least 3-4 critical baserunning errors and mistakes, including several pick-offs on steal attempts from first (against a Lefty !) and a huge 2-out blunder getting picked off second with Cather, our #3 and probably best clutch hitter, at the plate !?

Defense - Ouch ! Nuff said ? Three errors, two legit (one, a short hop shot to the SS backhand was a nasty pea !), were critical, with a misplayed pop fly in fair territory behind 1B and the wild toss to 1B on a routine, 2-out, 4-3 groundball with runner at third allowing unearned runs. At other times, the guys did look smooth and made the plays, and the outfield did a nice job of tracking down several deep shots to the gaps.

Defintely a game of coulda, shoulda, "wish I had", and while no doubt left the guys pretty frustrated with the outcome, it is what it is, a typical first game of a long season after a long lay-off, and there were certainly enough bright spots, good plays and solid at bats to give cause for optimism.

Today's Games are Scheduled as TWO 9-inning affairs, scheduled for 2 and 6PM, so the use of only one reliever yesterday could be pretty key by game 2 today, let alone tomorrow's game ?
