Wagg Scores Three Consecutive to Surge No. 25 Black Bears Past Holy Cross, 9-1

ORONO, Maine - With the No. 25 Black Bears up by just a goal at 2-1 halfway through the first half of the season opener, senior Samantha Wagg recorded a 'natural hat trick' by registering three consecutive goals in a 13-minute span to lead Maine past Holy Cross by a score of 9-1.

Wagg led the Black Bears (1-0, 0-0 AE) with six points on the day, while classmates Casey Crowley (1 goal, 3 assists) and Libby Riedl (2 goals) finished with five and four points, respectively. Sophomore Hana Davis, added a score in the first half, while sophomore Brooke Sulinski and freshman Nina Keur tallied their first collegiate goals in the contest.

Emily Loprete scored the lone goal for the Crusaders (0-1, 0-0 Patriot) in the 17th minute of the first half.

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
The Black Bears dominated possession in the contest, firing off 36 shots, while limiting Holy Cross to just four shots and only two shots on goal.
Of the 36 Maine shots, an impressive 77.8 percent reached the net.
10 of the 17 Black Bears that played in the game registered at least a point.
Maine's nine goals are the most scored in a game since the Black Bears put up 12 goals against Bryant virtually a year ago on Aug. 29, 2017.
Freshman Mia Borley picked up her first collegiate win in net, starting her Black Bear career at a perfect 1-0.
Cassandra Mascarenhas made a key defensive save in the 11th minute, as Borley was out of the goal to make a stop, but Mascarenhas was there to prevent a goal when Maine was up 2-0.
Reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Marcia LaPlante made 18 saves in the loss.
Maine has now won five consecutive meetings against Holy Cross, extending its lead in the all-time series to 18-2-1. The all-time score of the series is 61-18 in favor of the Black Bears.
The six Maine seniors are now 20-6 at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex in their careers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
2:38 | Just over two-and-a-half minutes into the season, Brittany Smith found Rieldl with space who dribbled inside the circle and fired a shot past the Holly Cross goalkeeper for the first goal of 2018
10:44 | Hana Davis notched her first goal of 2018 on when Crowley setup Davis with a pass along the right side for a breakaway. Davis fired on an angle to deliver the second Maine goal.
17:26 | The Crusaders answered when Patriot League Preseason all-conference member Emily Loprete deposited a pass from Madeline Alderfer.
19:58 | On a penalty corner, Ella Mosky initiated a pass to Smith, who settled and dished the ball to Samantha Wagg. Wagg crushed a shot past the right side of the keeper.
25:11 | Just over five minutes later in a nearly identical situation on a penalty corner, Emily Hindle inserted a pass to Cassandra Mascarenhas who gave the ball up to Wagg. Wagg again found the right side of the net.
32:39 | Wagg completed the natural hat trick after scooping a rebound off a Crowley shot near the circle. She fought off a defender for possession, sneaking the shot past the goalkeeper's right side.
45:08 | Crowley setup Riedl's second goal of the contest with a beautiful pass in space. Rield with room dribbled from right to left to center herself to slap a shot past the goalkeeper's stick side low left.
51:02 | Crowley netted a goal of her own in the 52nd minute, when Ella Mosky was parallel with the goal on the right end line, as Moksy setup Crowley with a one timer.
52:34 | Sulinski tallied her first goal of her career on Crowley's third assist when she chipped a pass ahead to Sulinksi on the right side of the goal. As the pass neared the keeper, Sulinski was able to earn possession and direct the pass in to the open left side of the net.
52:49 | In her first career game, Keur gained possession in front of the net, lifting the ball high as the goalkeeper had no chance to make the save.
