Derba encouraged by Maine baseball's offensive output
..."The biggest thing was our ability to continue to pile runs on," head coach Nick Derba said Wednesday. "That's something that we haven't done in my five years here. I haven't seen us do that. That's a testament to the guys and their desire to just win and win as much as possible. And that's something that's part of culture building and it's just good to see."

Stony Brook Tops Baseball in Weekend Finale

ORONO, Maine – A three-run first inning helped Stony Brook to a 5-2 win over the University of Maine baseball team on Sunday at Mahaney Diamond.

Christopher Bec, Hernen Sardinas, Jonathan Bennett and Cody Pasic all tallied one hit for Maine on the day, with Sardinas driving in a run. Colin Ridley drove in Maine's other run on a fielder's choice play in the seventh.

Cody Laweryson was strong in relief for the Black Bears, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just one hit and striking out five in his scoreless relief appearance. The sophomored retired the first 14 batters that he faced before the 15th batter touched him up for a double. Laweryson, though, struck out the very next batter for the third out of the inning.

Nick Silva started for Maine, pitching 2.0 innings and giving up four runs – three earned – on seven hits with two strikeouts before giving way to Connor Johnson for 2.0 innings.

The win bumped Stony Brook to 17-12 overall and 5-3 in league play while Maine moved to 9-21 overall and 4-3 in America East play.

After the Seawolves opened up the first inning with three consecutive singles, Bobby Honeyman drove in the first run of the day with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Two more singles would drive in two more runs to give the visitors a 3-0 lead after half a frame.

Maine responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Bec doubled to center, putting him in scoring position with two outs, and then Sardinas singled down the right field line to drive him in.

Stony Brook capitalized on an error in the second and answered Maine's run to make it 4-1 before adding one more in the fourth, with both being scored by Nick Grande.

The Black Bears showed patience at the plate in the seventh, with Sardinas, Brandon Vicens and Bennett drawing walks to load the bases with no outs. Maine was able to push one across, with Ridley's hard hit fielder's choice ball pushing Sardinas across, but that would be it for the Black Bears in the inning.

Sardinas reached first on a pass ball to start the ninth and then Bennett moved him to second with a single. Kevin Doody put down a sacrifice bunt to push them both into scoring position but Aaron Pinto closed out the game for his eighth save of the year.

Maine is back in action next weekend with games against Monmouth University and Sacred Heart.

Former Valley High star becomes ‘go-to guy’ in bullpen for UMaine baseball team

...Opposing hitters are batting .225 against him.

“I worked on my offspeed pitches for the most part (last summer),” said the 6-foot-3, 175-pound Laweryson. “I can throw my fastball for strikes almost any time. But I’ve got to consistently get my offspeed pitch, which is my slider, in the zone.”

Last season he was 4-2 with a 3.08 ERA. He struck out 40 and walked 14 in 38 innings and made 19 of his 20 appearances in relief.

“He is our go-to guy,” said UMaine head coach Nick Derba. “He is much better than he was last year. His fastball has more velocity and more movement and his slider is much better. And he has added a sinker.”
