Doesn't look to good for the Hartford opener with a forecast of 10-16" of the white stuff and highs in the low 40's thru the weekend. :(

Maine baseball enters America East play without its top starter

ORONO - It hasn’t been the start to the season Maine baseball envisioned. The Black Bears ended their long road slate on an eight game losing streak and lost their top arm.

Maine will open up America East play this weekend without injured No. 1 starter Justin Courtney. Head coach Nick Derba didn’t specify if the injury would keep Courtney out long term, nonetheless it’s a big hit for the Black Bears. Courtney leads Maine with a 2.57 earned run average and is holding opponents to a .176 batting average.

Despite team’s early struggles, UMaine baseball coach optimistic about season

... “It’s a very frustrating start but I’m optimistic,” said Derba. “If you go back over the 21 games, it came down to one or two pitches in several games. We could be around .500.

“We aren’t a 4-17 team. We’re very competitive,” Derba stated.

UMaine has lost seven games by one or two runs.

Complicating matters for Derba is the uncertain status of pitchers Justin Courtney of Bangor and Matt Pushard of Brewer.

ORONO, MAINE (WABI) - UMaine baseball opens conference play tomorrow at Hartford. The Black Bears are just 4-17. They've dropped 8 in a row. But they are starting to show signs the 2nd half will be much better than the first....
