Congrats to Coach Barron and congrats to Maine.
We have a competent coach at the helm and the state is grateful.
Now, about that Moss kid... :)

so third person to call me out because of a simple question .. what has he done in mens coaching ranks? why is he a good hire?

Richard Barron's bio shows he turned around wbb program at University of the South (Sewanee, Div. III), took Princeton wbb from 2-25 to Ivy title in five years, turned around wbb program at UMaine. And, oh, yeah, he was an assistant men's basketball coach and assistant football coach at Sewanee and coached boys in a North Carolina prep school that plays at the national level.

Sounds to me like the kind of coach a national search might have turned up. And here he was right in our backyard. Who wouldn't take that deal? Other than bballnut, that is.

Congratulations, Richard. And thank you.

Not trying rain on everyone's parade... I don't see why we can't disagree...

The recruiting worlds are completely different from womens to mens .. Has he been building the network on mens side for past decades too? I'd be surprised .. We saw what happened with hiring a D3 coach with little D1 recruiting skills .

Wasn't everyone ready to run Barron out after his behavior as coach before they discovered medical condition ..

But' I'll move on, back to the sidelines and let you enjoy the new hire

Good luck Maine !

Barron is a great hire! Of course, it always remains to be seen by results. Might as well give a proven winner and marketer a chance when he's right here. Saves the athletic department some search time and tidies things up before Karlton Creech leaves..Now lets put an athletic director in place from within and tidy up even more. Lynn Coutts maybe??

This is a very out of the box hire. Not a lot of AD's (maybe 1%) would take a chance like this. Being a former college coach, two things come to mind. FIrst, Not having any real "mens" experience doesn't necessarily mean falure. X and O's he knows the game and how to scout etc. Second, he needs to have a staff of experienced recruitiers that know the men's recrutiing scene and can show him the recruting landscape. That to me is the biggest hurdle. Knowing who the major players are in AAU and high school. Who knows if this works out, maybe more schools would be willng to take a chance like this. lastly, the funny thing is if this was a men's coach taking a women's job all the women's coaches would be up in arms about taking away from a qualified female. Since its a man taking a men's job nobody is going to say a word about Barron taking away an opportunity from a qualifed individual that has been paying his dues on the men's side.

If bcbc55 is awake yet he must be baffled at this. He doesn't know who to hate first with this hire. "But Markwood is from Maine."

The thing to remember with Maine athletics is just how drastically underfunded the athletic department is compared to the schools they compete against. Let's take a look at some salaries from the America East.

Maine: $120,000/year
Vermont: $251,000/year
Albany: $350,000/year
UHN: $152,000/year
Stony Brook: $365,000/year

Who could Maine, a school with no tradition in men's basketball (along with the host of other challenges the program faces) hire for $30,000/year less than the closest coach in the AE is making. The Maine job pays less than half of what the top schools in just this conference pay, and as Cim loves to ramble on about it's one of the weakest D1 conferences in the country.

Barron loves Maine and living in the Bangor area. He's proven he can take a dumpster fire team and turn it around. He can bring in and keep talent to the state of Maine. Markwood wasn't going to take this job. If you crash and burn in your first head coaching job it's going to be real tough to get another one. Just watch where Walsh ends up as proof of this. There's realistically no one out there who understands the challenges that come with coaching in Maine better than Barron and if anyone can turn this around (which I'm not sure anyone can) it would be him.

Want to know why this is a bad hire?

Because he is a terrible human. Ask any member of the women's basketball team in the past 4 years and they will all have the same opinion. Everyone transferred because of him and more than 3 threatened to transfer if he came back. That is why Vachon got the job (that and she has been an incredible coach and leader).

The entire men's team is livid with this hire. They weren't sure it could get worse than Walsh but they are starting to prove otherwise. It will only show in time how much every athlete at Maine hates Barron. He is manipulative, has mental issues, and is a terrible, terrible person.

By everyone transferring out of the program you mean the 5 players who transferred right after he left the team? As in he was no longer their coach so they no longer wanted to play here?
