UMaine men have more positives then negatives in loss to VT

Not going with any stats or game writeup tonight as I usually do, as the BDN sports department has beat me to it. if you want the write up and stats just go to then hit sports.

I want to report on how UMaine had many more positives then Vermont did in a tough 74-62 loss. Trailing by 5 at half time the Bears cut the lead back to a couple in the second half.

You don't win with just more positives then negatives although it can help make you play better against a heavily favored opponent and that is just what the UMaine men's basketball team did tonight in playing the Vermont Catamounts at the CIC in Bangor tonight.

Here were some of Maine's positive positives.

1. Only played 6 players double figure minutes to Vermont's 7
2. Out scored VT 36-24 in the paint.
3. Took 14 more FGA's then Vermont 65 to 51
4. Only took 17 threes of 65 attempts just 29.6%
5. Had four players in double figures to match Vt's 4
6. Had 25 made field goals to VT's 24
7. Had 13 turnovers to VT's 14
8. Only had 3 less rebounds then a much bigger Vt team 38-35
9. 14 assists on 25 made field goals made

Here were the negatives

1. Out scored from the foul line 7 to 18
2. Committed too many fouls 19 to 14
3. Shot poorly from beyond the arc 29.6% on 5 of 17
4. Gave Vt to many open 3 looks 8 of 20 for 40%
5. Didn't take advantage enough of Vermont's poor play
6. Some poor shot selection at crucial times

Vermont showed the signs of why the are such a dominating team 15-1 in the conference for first place championship of the regular season by playing poorly on road and still win by a dozen. As you can see if the P's out weight the N's if Maine can keep the P' and improve on 3 of the 5 N's they have a chance, what so ever slight chance in pulling the biggest upset of the AE season if they could knock off Vermont at Burlington in the one and done, win or go home elimination tourney of number 8 at 3-13 over number 1 15-1 quarter-final..m the road and still winning by a dozen.

Maine certainly has nothing to lose and everything to win and can try to salvage another 20 plus loss 4th consecutive season while Vermont has all the pressure of being the heavy favorite and playing at home.

But, hey, that is why they play the games, you never know, let's hope Maine can keep their positives of tonight and reduce their negatives of tonight.

Like what changes were made tonight of playing only 6 players double figure minutes, getting the ball to the paint and inside more than Vermont, reducing the number of 3 attempts, played well on the boards against a bigger front line and balanced scoring of 4 players in double figures.
